Fuel Filter Differences? (2006)

I'm trying to change my fuel filter for the first time and I've run into problems. Filters from both the Dodge and Cummins dealers are slightly different than my original. My original has a hole on both top and bottom whereas the replacements only have holes on the bottom. The top hole on mine puzzle pieces into a male "bump" on the filter housing lid. Since the bump can't fit into the filter I can't seem to compress the lid far enough to start the threads, I'm afraid to force it.

Is this a common problem or just me?

The Fleeguard 7 micron filters and the Baldwin PF 7977 are the same as the factory one that came out of my 5.9l. Are you sure they gave you the correct filter?

Wait, You shold ONLY have a hole in the Bobbom of the filter. My facotry one and the ones I listed above neither have holes at both ends. Sounds like you have the CORRECT one now!!

I'll agree it sounds like the replacements are correct but they wont easily fit. LikeI said, the lid has a bump that fits into the hole on my OE filter. Without the hole the lid needs about 2 more rings of thread to reach the housing.

That bump on the lid is most likely so you can't use the old 10 micron filter.

So noone has had to deal with any physical differences in filters? I can't believe that I have the sole truck with an odd OE filter.

Others have had this problem. Some of the newer Fleetguard filters have
a slightly larger upper brim. Usually about 1/32" larger on the newer filters.

I use the Geno's metal filter cap and I found I had to sand/file about 1/32"
off the brim before I could seat the filter far enough into the cap. If you have
a 6" dial caliper you can compare the new and the old filter brims.

Other than a stamped PN on the filter, there are no visible differences between the 7u and 10u filters.

I think you have the wrong filter. The part that mates tot he filter lid should be flat (no hole) and the end that goes into the filter can has a hole to fit over the center post. Look at this one: It's sitting on the flat and showing the hole for the center; basically, it's upside down.

I've found it easier to snap the cap on to the new filter and then put in to the filter housing and tighten it up. If I put the filter in to the housing first and then try to put the cap I can't tighten it up unless you force the cap down on to the filter.
