differences between diesel fuel tanks & others?
Can anyone tell me what the difference between a "diesel" fuel tank and a "gasoline" tank is? Different alloys or plastics, maybe? Is there a difference between a diesel tank for trucks, and a "marine diesel" tank for boats?

Thanks.

If your talking aux tanks, the big differance between the diesel and gas tank is that the gas tank has a high pressure fuel pump with it. The diesel tanks don't have/need the pump.

???
OK, my fault probably, let me try this again: I'm trying to find out whether 5150 aluminum tanks used for gasoline can be used for diesel fuel. I would think so, given that gas is more volatile and requires more sophisticated venting systems. I believe that some of the tanks made for the big trucks use 5150 aluminum, too. Before I go ahead with this, I just wanted to check and make sure.
Point is, I don't want to spend $1100 on some of the frilly, complicated aftermarket fuel tanks I've seen, when I could get what I need for under $200.

It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

Pavonis, you have got me curious. Are you sure that the tanks are made from 5150? Could it be 6061 instead?

My typo.
*5051* aircraft aluminum alloy tanks, 20 gallon, 24"x20"x10", TIG welded seams, -8AN pickups & vents, top flush filler with cap, mounting hardware included, $169.95
Normally made for street or circle track racing with gas fuel. No bladder inside, straight aluminum alloy. Only issue seems to be, you have to reach inside the tank and remove the floating foam block that keeps the gas from aerating.

What about the marine "Plastic" tanks ? I have used these twice now to replace a rusted leaking steel tank, and a corroded aluminum tank . They are used comonly in boats and are available fairly inexpensively in a wide vaiety of shapes and volumes. I don't remember the type of plastic but am sure that if it is safe for gasoline , it would be safe for our diesels.
gary

If you buy a circle-track or drag race fuel cell from an outfit like Summit Racing, they'll have a sump built into the tank. According to their tech people, the aluminum or polyethylene cells work well with diesel fuel.

I just did the fuel system on my truck, and used this new sump that is a bolt on. We got the idea from a friend, and they are being made up right now. Mine was the first one out of the factory. I don't have any pics(get them on Monday), but here is the CAD drawing of it.

Pic of sump

So far I'm loving it. Has a -10AN ling comming out of it, and all the way to the prefilter, and into the PE4200. After pulling the tank, and seeing the crud in there, there is no way I would EVER run a pump without a prefilter. The -8AN line goes all the way into the stock filter housing, does NOT shrink down to -6AN line most. Had to drill out the filter housing for this, but it came out nice.

This is over kill for most, but I like it so far.

Andrew
