Drove the CTD 5.9 and 6.7 today....

Just wanted to share with the group that I was able to drive a 2007 5.9 2500 Mega Cab 4X4 and a 2007 6.7 2500 Mega Cab 4X4 today. They were both automatic with similar options. I am in the market for a 2500 or 3500 and am a big fan of the Mega cab. I wanted to drive them both to see if I could tell any difference and which one I would like more.

I am 100% sure that if you were pulling most of the time the 6.7 would be a great combo, but I will say that not towing anything the 5.9 was much more responsive. I drove each one the same 9 mile route and had a chance to get on the freeway. The 6.7 was a much less responsive compared to the 5.9. I'm sure if you had a manual transmission this would be different but when I compared the two, the 5.9 had greater acceleration from many speeds. I believe this has a lot to do with the low rpms the 6.7 was shifting at. It was amazing that even when I had it floored you could barely hear the engine revving because it just kept shifting. (again I'm sure a manual would be different, but I want an auto)

I also want to make a discloser that I currently have a 1500 Quad Cab Hemi and this is the first Diesel purchase I am going to make. I understand that acceleration is not something most people think of when they buy a diesel, but with as many people Bomb their trucks I just wanted to offer this to the group.

This site has been a great resource for me over the last few days and has helped me narrow in on what I wanted. I've seen a lot of posts where people are in a similar situation to mine and not sure what to get. I would suggest trying to drive both at the same time. I'm sure if you were able to hook a trailer up to it that would be helpful too but I don't think the dealer would allow it.

I have to say that I'm going with the 5.9. I think this is also a good engine and although I'm not crazy about the 4 speed auto, I won't be towing but 10-12 times a year and don't want a manual.

I would like to hear from anyone else that has done this and would be curious what they experienced.

I test drove a 6.7 auto as well and noticed the same thing, the engine makes so much power down low it's always shifting. I'm a manual guy, and wanted to see how the new auto was, still not totally impressed so i'll stick with the manual..

Can't you manually shift the new auto? Don't know if that would help acceleration or not. I gotta say, while I'd like a new truck, I'm SO happy with mine, I just can't justify it.

I didn't try that. I'm not sure if it does or not but I wouldn't want to manually shift it. This was the point of the auto. I must say though the 6.7 was that metallic black and sure is a nice color. The 5.9 was red. I can't stop thinking about what a nice truck that Mega cab is. I'm wondering if I wait a few more weeks they might come down on the 5.9's as they are receiving a lot more 6.7's?

drewallen-- I haven't driven anything newer than my 2002, really so I can't say much about the new ones.

I'd advise a 5.9 in general. The smaller displacement will help with MPG, and the 5.9 has plenty of power, as we all know.

That, and the 6.7 might be a little too new to trust fully. Let someone else play Ford buyer-- I mean Guinea Pig

it sounds like with a programer or something similar the 6.7 would kick but. It just seems that maybe that there to much transmission gearing for where the engine makes the power.

I'm sure that the Power and the gearing will shine while hooked up to a 10,000 pound trailer and starting out on a 6% Grade!! JB

It's possible but I wouldn't bet on it. The 5.9 is a known quantity and there are plenty of folks out there snatching up the last of them in the 07s for that very reason. I think the incentives they have on them now plus whatever you can haggle out of the dealer makes for a pretty fair deal. If it were me I'd get one now while they still have plenty to pick from.

Stick with a 5.9. Let Cummins work the bugs out of the 6.7 over the next few model years. Just my opinion.

well when i drove the new 6speed auto duramax when it first came out i thought it was the weakest thing i ever sat in, then i lined it up against my buddies brand new dodge with auto and spanked him, and he had a 2wd 4 door dually against the 4 dr 4x4 dually i was driving, so maybe you just cant feel the power as good since it is shifting so much

we just received the new 6.7 2500 quad cab!! its make 2 week and our other truck is a 5.9 2005 2500 quad cab!! i must say that 6.7 is more quiet than the 5.9, however expect to loose 1 or 2 mpg compare to the 5.9!! i me too hate the crappy stuff (egr) but could you beleave that the truck have now 1600 kilometers (1000 miles) and the exhaust tip is still clean when i put my finger.....the 5.9 is not a pollutant engine..but the 6.7 is verry a new generation clean engine beleave me folks!! on the performance side..not much difference except on top end for the 6.7....(stock for stock)

the bad side is the lot of electronic sensor on this engine....the filter have sensor on it!!! otherwise the 6.7 should do the job as good as the 5.9 did since 1989.......
