Drove through the Rockys today and eng. temp went way up

So I'm on my way to California and as I was driving through the Rocky Mts. and my edge monitor started to alert me that my eng temp was at 214. I was on level one the whole time and only pulling a 3000 lb car, is this normal?

214 doesn't really worry me, 220 and above starts to make me worry. I work on gas cars though, so no clue here.

This is probably way off but the air is thinner up here than where your from this might be the reason for the higher temps due to a lack of oxygen to compress?? I know my truck runs cooler and has more power at lower altitudes. Just my 02.

This is true, the higher the elevation, the lower the temp water will boil at. Pressure cookers are real popular in high altitude cooking.

I pulled my 13k 5er through the worst parts of the rocky mountains, and only when I was reving too high would the engine temps go high like that. What gear were you in? Try bumping up to 3 or 4 on the juice, that should help

ok, ill try the higher level on my way back. Its amazing how many more dodge's CTD I see compared to where im from. All sorts of styles, its pretty cool. Well, if anyone sees me in california or anywhere on I-70, I-15 or even I-80, be sure to honk. Hopefully you guys remember what my truck looks like.

Should have stoped by man, could have went out and had a good time. The rockys are pretty bad, i drive them regularly. I would flush your system, put good coolant in it, crank the edge up a little and try it.

214...no worries. Glad you finally got to climb a real grade at a real elevation. I bet you saw EGT's a little higher than normal too. LOL.

It is a different world above 5-6-7-8,000 feet. Then there is 12,000 feet.

Glad there ar NO dyno's/strips that high. ;-)
