change oil filter w/o the mess

anyone who has changed the oil filter on the 6.7 knows how messy it can be
so after warming the truck up I dumped the oil and while it was draining I went in the house and had lunch with the wife, made some phone calls etc.
about an hour later I buttoned up the oil pan and then started to remove the filter and lo and behold, no spills ! in fact after sitting for an hour the pressure must have back off and the oil in the filter was about a half inch below the top. let her sit for an hour boys

I usually let mine sit long enough to drop the plug without burning myself and the pull the filter and have no trouble keeping it all in the filter. Maybe 20-30 mins.

Not as easy a change as my '90 but still an easy change none the less.

Thanks for the info!

Zip Lock Bag

I don't have a 6.7 but I loosen mine until I can turn it with my hand and then slip a big zip lock over it to catch any oil... then zip the whole thing up and throw it away-

The 5.9 and 6.7 have the same setup for an oil filter.. Change it cold and it wont spill... If you like to drain the oil when warm then drain the oil, and let it sit for a while like you found..

Any engine you change hot will spill at the filter.

X2 on all the above responses. I change the oil first when it cools down enough to safely handle and do the filter last. Never have spilled a drop of oil from the filter. Of course, it's important to keep the filter as vertical as you can when it comes loose

X3 on the above. Just for fun, do you guys loosen the filter through the wheel well area or go underneath.

I did it with the fenerliner removed this last time since I was plumbing my coolant filter, much easier. Removing the fenderliner is a non-issue, 2 minutes tops.

In the past I have gone from the top down without issue.

I always roll under the truck on a creeper. 93mm cap wrench on a long extension to loosen the filter and spin it off. A plastic bag over the old filter makes it nearly impossible to spill any oil.

I do it from underneath. I always use K&N oil filters since they have a 1" nut welded to the bottom. I simply use a 1/2" socket wrench with a long extension to both loosen and tighten the filter. Real easy, although having long arms does help when it comes time to remove the filter by hand after loosening or when installing .

Fleetguard offers a cap that will fit on the end of the filter. Just attach the cap to your ratchet and off it comes, as easy as could be.
