Auto vs. stick
Love my manual even though you can't depend on the synchros with the present oil anyway... yet another good reason to stay single! If my girlfriend needs to spell my driving it will be on the highway and she can stay in 6th!
Romping on 5th and shifting to 6th is a lot of fun too! Granny gear good. Wish 6th was a little taller but it's okay.

I replace the clutch in both my brother and brother in laws 07 5.9 with less than 30K on both and both have over 300K cummins/manual experience pulling the same loads that they do with there new trucks. I drive both trucks often and both are used for towing every day. I put SB Con FE's in both of them and now they both have EDGE Juice with Attitude and have never looked back. I have put many many miles towing and empty on 92-96-03-05-07 with manuals and I will say that I have always preferred a manual but I don't like how the new G56 shifts and have seen way to many clutch probs with the 07 5.9. I don't know if the 6.7 uses the same clutch but I didn't want to spend $42K on a new truck and have to spend $1300 on a clutch 25Kmiles later (clutch warranty is only 12K miles my auto is covered for 100K with the extra warranty I got). I have put 11 clutches in trucks last year on the side so its not like I don't know how I just get tired of it. My auto stock will pull just as good as there manual 5.9 with there old 65HP EDGE EZ (that's why they have the 100HP Attitude now). Just to compare we loaded my brothers 15,400lb man lift on his 24ft TD goose neck and took it up a hill he pulls it up once a week or better. At the top I was going 6mph faster than he did on 60HP setting. Going down I could keep the same speed with out ever hitting the brakes just the Exhaust brake and down shifting I raced my brother in law with his on 100HP and was even with a 15mph rolling start. From a dead stop he was not even close. I have driven a 6.7 manual and I don't like it any better. I also get 2-4 mpg better than both of theres when they were stock city and highway. Just so you know they never had clutch probs out of any of there other trucks 01-03-05-07 and all went over 100K before they were sold and still had the stock clutch. my 92 went almost 300K on the stock clutch.
In the end its all up to you. Just drive them both and see what you like better. I use to fight it but now I really like just pushing the go peddle and it goes.
But none of them will hang with my 96 5spd but thats a nother deal all together

... but really, if a guy's trying to decide which way to go, only HE really knows.
If a guy is in his 30's or 40's and has never owned a stick, he should probly stick with the auto, chances are he won't like shifting.
You don't hear of many people who've been driving autos for 20 years buying a stick and loving it I don't thinkż

It depends on the person driving and how big his wallet is. A built auto is dang hard to beat but you better have about 6 G's to get it. A stock handshaker is easier to service and cheaper to maintain over the auto.
I have the manual for reasons already stated but for what I test drove and NOW the reputation the new auto has I would not hesitate to buy one. The manual is ok if you drive like an old man but it is not great for acceleration runs. I'm getting older but I still luv that 97 12valve for acceleration.
ive had both also. I had an 05 6 speed and it was fun but after changing the clutch to something grabby the fun was gone driving it daily. I have an auto now and its a blast to floor it and go but it was an expensive build for it to hold power. I think for towing a 6 speed is the best. It all depends on the truck I think. to me the 48re auto built with the right parts can be very strong for competition and so can the NV5600 with a dual disc clutch. I really enjoy my auto truck but the next one will probably be an older handshaker when I buy another truck.
I have driven sticks all my life. Only my last couple of trucks were auto. I personally prefer a manual. I drove the 68rfe auto and a G56 manual with a 6.7. I was thinking of trading and getting one or the other. After I drove the stick I deceided it was O.K. I really liked the 68rfe but didn't want to take the chance when I loaded it up heavy it would act the same as my 48re. I thought about the times I would need to back my long trailer up using a stick and being stuck in traffic for hours due to an accident. Instead of opting for a new truck with a stick I have just bit the bullet (gulp) and order the parts for my tranny upgrade. This was my decision after thinking about it in all aspects. So you deceide how you are going to use the truck and make your own decision. The fact that the clutch that comes with a G56 (DMF) did make my decision easier as stated above.

only owned manuals in all of my trucks. i like to think i'm smart enough to shift when necessary. much more fun and more control. my '99 ford went 125,000 until it needed a throwout bearing. put a clutch in becasue i was in there. that truck towed 4k 5 days a week. put 50k on my '05 before getting rid of it for my current dodge. i like the serviceablity of a manual.
