98 12v auto to stick
I have an oportunity to get a 1998 12v ext cab SB 4x4 already bombed. been into cummins NW for all of its services. Including pulling the motor at 100k and resealing . Basically a well maintained. I will concead that it has been used hard off road during hunting season every year, so i have my reservations about the frame or any cracks. but aside from that a great clean truck.
Black, pimpin stereo. Fresh t-case, rear diff bearing and front diff bearings. and lifted 5" super lift which i would yank out. wood dash and new seats, 4" exhaust. Gauges and a set of unused 370hp injectors.
157,000 miles
$11,000 Truck has spent its life in montana so the undercarriage is going to be messy but now im just nit picking.
Im thinking buy it swap in th 6spd, and the D80 with disk brakes that i happen to have. Down side is its an auto and all it is going to do is mainly be a heavy tow rig
Would you guys do it? Cause i know im thinking real seriously that the 2002 24v that i have is going down the road and the 98 is going to join my world.

Do a search here. There has been a couple other discussion about changing an auto to stick.
The general conclusion is that it can be a lot of work and $$$$.
It may be better to either build up the auto to handle the power, or just hold out for a stick if thats what you feel you'll need.

LOL, except when you have the drivelines, crossmembers and flywheel already from a burned out 2001 ext cab SB with six speed. and since i built the ford cummins from a 460 auto i dont perceive the barries to be too difficult. a pedal assembly, hydraulic assembly and the platic bezel and block off plate for the dash. a few wires for a reverse switch. luckily its 12v not 24v.
The question more so is would you trade a perfectly good injection pump headache like my 2002 for a 98 12v. Im thinking so, and then i probably wont dive right in and change trannys this year it will probably be next winter. more so just itching for a challenge and a 98 12v ext cab SB

Don't be afraid of the auto..if you are going to put the money into the manual changeover, you can put it into a built trans and have a lot less headaches. As to the 5" lift..I have the same one and the truck handles GREAT! I thought the same thing when I bought it (remove) but after driving it a while,I LOVE IT!.

thats my point, he lost an axle seal so he decided to rebuild the front end. if you saw the bearings that came out of it you probably would have reused them.

Stick the money into some DTT parts and be done with it. My tranny is getting some of these parts by the end of the month. This why I will not have to worry about it anymore. DTT built transmissions are very reliable in my book.

If you have the parts, buy the truck and swap in the 6 speed. It's not that big of a job, it took me about sixteen hours to change mine over. That was with limited tools and the truck setting on the ground, oh yea, and no transmission jack. It's not that much work, just remember when rewiring the neutral safety switch to make it a clutch switch, the wire is a ground, not a hot. It took me allmost two hours to figure that one out. Goodluck with what ever you do, Darl

Don't think it would present any problems. I'm preaty sure it doesn't even go though the computer. Other things such as the cruise control worked just fine after the conversion. Only thing I couldn't get rid of was the trans temp light, so I took out the bulb. Of course if I pull the codes for the computer, every one that deals with the tranny come up. Not a big deal for me though. Darl
