5.9 or 6.7 what to buy
greygrizz the biggest problem I had was the fuel mileage difference in between the two. The 6.7 always went in to regen all the time at least twice a day. The edge attitude let me know when it did. I guess that what cause the bad fuel mileage.
What was your HAND CALCULATED mileage on the 6.7 if you were driving STRICTLY highway?
I've had all three 12v, 5.9 and now the 6.7. I love the 6.7 and will stick with the 6.7 from here on in. with that said my 6.7 just went into the shop because of the emissions problem(like most 6.7s). With that said if you look back at all three engines there was something wrong with all them my 92 12v couldn't keep a tranny in it, my 98 5.9 like to eat up breaks and hubs(every 30,000) my 03 5.9 spit out 2 lift pumps(49&100,000)and now the 6.7 gets all plugged up and smokes like a bugger but I'd still go with the 6.7.

I believe that you are wrong on this one. The percentage of people having problems is way lower than the people with no problems. Not saying we won't. I only have 4000 miles on mine and no problems. I'm just saying that for now most people are not having problems.

my hand cal was 13 mpg on the 6.7 and all highway and my 5.9 is 19 mpg all hand cal. All I could get out of the 6.7 was 400 miles to the tank and the 5.9 been getting me 600. I drive a 140 mile round trip to work so 200 miles to the tank is a lot for me. But I did love the 6-speed auto but it was not worth 200 miles less a tank.

Sorry, I knew this was going to happen, I would imagine the reason for saying (most 6.7) is because it left me on the side of the road with only 2300ks on the truck
. I would imagine if your new truck left you on the side of the road you might have used the same phrase. My truck is used to to make me money, when it breaks down It cost me alot of money in lost wages I'll be sure to pick different phrases if I should ever have a break down again

If you need a truck now, go with the 5.9, I would wait at least a year before I would get a 6.7, let them get the bugs worked out. My cousin just got a 6.7 & its been in the shop 6 times already, all electrical problems, I picked up my 5.9 in 2/07 ('07) & have not had any problems yet, & I use it daily in my contracting business, good power, nice working truck. One the other hand, my cousin loves his 6.7, when its running.
No biggy rig welder. I just didn't want anyone trying to decide which engine to get, to think that EVERYbody is having trouble. And yes, I would be a little P.O.ed if my new truck left me standed. I believe they have the emissions stuff figured out now. I think one of the other problems is the fuel. These emission systems don't like sulfer. The sticker on the pump says ULSD , but is it really???? I know they are pretty strict on that stuff, but maybe some of the stations had some LSD in the tank still when they switched to ULSD???? Just a thought.
I 100% agree with this statement...If all they're having problems with his the emissions then why wouldn't you buy a new 6.7 with the 6 spd auto? I did and I'm not looking back! I had my 2005 5.9 in the shop more than it was in my own garage, so I got rid of it for the 6.7. Granted, I never had one single problem with the emissions or the engine, but what does it matter what the problem is or was? It's still in the shop non the less!
Apache....
I made 8 trips to the dealer in 7000 miles. Finally they were going to keep my truck for 6 weeks for a new dpf that were on backorder. Thats when I threw in the towel. I only ran ulsd and ran it on the freeway everyday at 80mph. No mods. Some of the codes were low boost, to much boost, no boost detected yadda yadda. It seemed never ending. Give em some time they will figure it out i am sure. Just not on my time.
Thanks Bigman. At this point, you did the right thing.
As I mentioned earlier I plan to order an 09' 6.7. They should have it lined out by then. I just can't make 8 dealer trips 150 miles away along with the disruption that goes with it.

My 04' turned to stock got DESTROYED horribly by my dads 6.7 from every stop light. With the TS ramifier we were neck and neck. The 6.7 is no dog, pulls trailers like a freight train.
