To Buy or Not To Buy

My Dad is looking at a 2001 2500 24V CTD w/6 speed 4x4 extended cab shortbed w/82000 miles. He is thinking about trading his 2001 2500 gasser 4x4 in on it but is nervous about the diesel. I have had 1st gens for a couple years with very little trouble. What should he be concerned about with this truck. BTW it has 4in mandrel bent straight pipe, boost and EGT gauges, Banks high ram, and maybe a chip. Truck runs awesome.... Any help in getting my old man away from the spark impaired ignition would be great. Oh yeah the dealer is asking $24K

The biggest thing to look out for on the 24V is low fuel pressure. You would need to get that checked out before buying. The only thing you need is a fuel pressure gauge and some tubbing. You could also ask the dealer to check it out since you are buying it from them, but make sure that they use a pressure gague. I would want to see them do it also so that I can see for sure what the pressure is at. If these trucks run below 10 psi at wide open throttle (wot) then the fuel pump or possible the injection pump could go bad. The only other big thing to watch out for would be a 53 block. This is stamped on the side of the block on the passanger side just above the oil pan. Just go and give the truck a good look over and try to talk the dealer down, $23K for that truck sounds a little steep. JMO

I agree with farmer dave. Price is too high though. I'll sell him mine if that's what they are going for.

The lift pumps on these trucks are notorious for going bad sometimes taking out the injection pump as well$$. The price seems a little steep to me. My buddy just bought a black 02 6 spd quad cab 4x4 with 34k miles from the dealer down the street for $22k.

There were a few. I have had at least one fellow tell me he owns one. There were even a few 98 12v's with 53 blocks.

Dad bought that truck today. Had the dealer check fuel psi and I checked for the infamous #53. PSI was good and #55 cast into the block. He had to give his gasser and $11k after taxes. Not too bad huh?

Well, now all that you have to get your dad to do is start bombing that rig. The first thing to do is get gauges. Fuel pressure at a minimum. And tell him good luck with the new truck.

He talked to the PO and was told there is a Banks Powerpack on the truck. It includes pre turbo pyro and boost. I mentioned the fuel pressure gauge yesterday (does anyone make an electric gauge w/ sender)? The PO also said the Powerpack chip was good for 140 hp. All I know is it will walk the dog quite nicely. Now I have to bomb my first gen to keep up with the old man. What a shame!!
