Truck Died-Leaking Fuel When Cranking

Last night (luckily right by my house) my 2006 died while I was driving it. There was a strong smell of fuel. When I got out I was dripping fuel from the back of the motor somewhere. It is dripping down the outside of the front of the transmission (by the torque converter / fly wheel area). It turns over strong, but will not start and leaks fuel when I crank it. Just checked and no DTC Codes stored. I am going to head out and try to see what is leaking, but wanted to see if anyone had this issue to help me focus my search. Thanks in advance.

Look at # 4 Injector line, known for cracking, I would think it would run though.

Follow the clues. Common rail broken fuel line will prevent it from running.

Should be easy to follow the puddle upstream till you get to the leak.

My 06 5.9 was leaking from the CP3 pump. The man who fixed it said there was a bolt on the from of the pump going through a small plastic pc that was one half turn loose. He said at best you can only get about 3 to 4 threads on that bolt..stopped the leak. The fan was blowing it back across the oil pan making it look like it was coming from everywhere.

Well found it. It was the #4 fuel line that was broken. Going to take it off now. Any tips to watch out for? Thanks for the help.

Just replaced mine about a month ago. It's simple. The new one has a much better clamp and bolt now!

Keep everything CLEAN. Any little speck of dirt that gets in the fuel system can wreak havoc. Also do NOT check for leaks after install with your hand. The pressures involved are lethal. Instead use a piece of cardboard to check for leaks.

Oh, welcome to the '06 broken #4 fuel line club......

Mine was #5, didn't stop running just doused the the motor with fuel. The clamp came loose and the pressure and vibration broke it. The new one has a much better clamp design. Now I check them from time to time.

Glad you found it. Ever since this problem was made known on this board, I've checked all of the clamps at every oil change. So far so good and I'm at 126K miles.

I did the same thing but that was not often enough. About half way to my oil change is when mine decided to come loose and break!

I blew my 04 #4 fuel line last Friday. Easy fix. Pain in the *** to drive 300 mile round trip for a $70 part.

#4 also

I lost # 4 also a couple years ago heading into Charleston, WV on the turnpike. I smelled a little diesel but didn't realize I was leaking copious amounts of fuel until I saw the cars behind me with their wipers on. I was freaked out, but the whole thing was hilarious at the time because of the other cars with their wipers on. Still gives me a laugh. Anyway, replaced in Charleston at the dealer for $195 bucks I think. I diagnosed it for them thanks to DTR and it's members. Also, Injectors can go south slowly. Once you get the codes and cant get them to go away it's time to start looking for a replacement. Ebay was the route I went. I think I paid $150 for a junkyard injector. Running like new.
