Tranny going down?
Tranny going down?
Last month we went on vacation to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and I think the up/down driving finished off the 48re. I did get 182k miles off of it, even with the mods
But now, when I punch it from stop, the motor screams an the truck goes slow. I'm guessing its something with 1st and 2nd because once you are up to around 30mph an stomp on it, she flies! I do not normally punch it, I like the HP cause it gives MPG
so any of you guys experience this? Its not the slip-n-bang type of slipping, but shes not getting power to the rear. Anything I should checkout before I submit a trip to the transmission shop?... in other words is there anything I can do under $3k?
BTW, I did put fresh Amsoil in the tranny and a filter last year. Not many shavings, looked good.

I'm thinking this: I need more info to help you fix it.
Seriously, are you punching the throttle with a cold motor?
I know several who do this and they have spent a lot money fixing the motor.
don't run it hard until it is up to temps.
Normally I do not, I'm just trying to recreate the issue. I actually drive like a grandpa... which I get flack from my pa-in-law because he drives his Porsche and BMW like a bat out of hell.... but back to the topic. The only reason I found this issue is because I was launching hard one day trying to get a 0-60 on an iPhone app.
So tonight, after driving it for a while, I got it up to around 10lb boost and let'er rip. I got all the way to 3rd at around 55-60 mph before it began dropping. I did it 3 times and only one out of the 3 times did it do this.
I'm beginning to think the seat-of-his-pants diagnosis by the diesel tech was incorrect because the motor sound and power all decreased. I'm thinking it may be a lift pump issue. I put a BD diesel lift pump on it around 125k miles and I'm up to 182k now. It was a cheaper one because money was tight at the time, around $250. What would be a good way to check and see if I am right?

Put in a fuel pressure gauge and keep it there. Go for a drive and watch what it does during the symptoms.
EVERY modern diesel needs a fuel pressure gauge, if for nothing else, to monitor the fuel filter condition.

If your fluid is okay, your clutches probably are too. Put in a TC and a VB and a billet strut and servo for under $2K and it will probably last another 200,000 miles.

Ok, got my fuel pressure gauge in today from Glowshift. It is a 30 psi one and I think I have something wrong on installation. I got the banjo bolt under the fuel filter, Snubber valve, then sensor. But the readings are very sporadic. Did I do something wrong. Keep in mind, I have a BD lift pump relocated to the rail underneath the drivers seat.
