Someone please try this and give opinion.

OK, background. I am a believer in very low quantity upper cylinder lubrication. My dad always used Marvel Mystery oil or something similar in gas for many of our different engines as I was growing up. His engines always lasted a long time, in fact I do not remember having engine trouble with any vehicle or implement dad used upper cyl lube in. We even used it in our airplane, just don't tell the FAA. Now, I am no Mystery oil fanatic and I was trained to thing logically but, why couldn't you use a lubricant in a diesel fuel, as long as it is designed to burn, as long as it will mix with diesel, to add in the lubricity that has been taken out in refinement of the "new" diesel fuels? So I headed off to figure out what lubrication to use. I do not need all the "anti-gel" additives at 80 degrees plus that are added in the diesel additives, therefore they were not really applicable to my test. I also wanted to keep the cetane boosters out of the figure. I do not know what the Mystery in marvel oil is and it is expensive too. I will not use anything that is not =designed to burn therefore regular oil is out! I arrived on 2 cycle oil as a viable option. I bought a cheap brand of two cycle oil down at wal-mart. I added 8 ounces to my full fuel tank, this is a very low amount as compared to a two stroke engine- but it is being used for an entirely different purpose. Just slightly increase the lubricity of the diesel. I wish I had a measureable method to be sure, but within 15 minutes of driving my engine- as quiet as it is normally, became even quieter. The diesel sound on acceleration seemed to smooth up and the idle is impossible to tell from a gasser now. This was the first attempt with this engine, and I'm not saying I'm going to do this every time or anything, but it seems to quiet the injectors which is about all you can hear on the 2003 HO other than the exhaust. What if I used 4 oz in the next tank and it helps still? Could it benefit the fuel to be sure the injectors keep lubed up and smooth in function? I'm sure the pumps both like having the increase in lube. What do you think? Try it and see if you see the difference. Please reply with your finding.

not sure about ur theory but any oil burns...recent discusion around here says the mystery about marvel is it has no libricating properties but is more of a detergent. not sure of the accuracy of this but i have been using it in my gassers for years with no noticable detriment and probably on the psychological benefit. if you check Stanadyne's site they have gone through the trouble of testing certian products like you are trying. I dont remember seeing 2 cycle oil being one of them.

Sounds like a good idea. However, I'd be concerned about warranty issues. The stealers are always looking for a way out of honoring the warranty. This may do it. According to the now long lost LUKE, using a K&N filter will void the warranty on the turbo. So, introducing a foreign substance to the fuel system may void it as well.

Then again, maybe not.

2 cents

I've had good luck in all my engines too, but I've never used it.

I think if Cummins had the historical data to back up any claims that the use of MMO contributed to the life of the engine, or reduced the amount of warranty claims etc, they would require or at least recommend its use, or better yet, bottle it themselves and sell it for more money.

Why does the FAA have issue with the use of it? Are they worried about light planes falling out of the sky? Or are they worried about putting aircraft mechanics out of business by increasing the TBO of the engines?

Ever burned Castrol R in it? We could drive around smelling like a motocross track.

I don't see any problems running some 2 cycle oil mixed with diesel. Diesels tend to run better when the fuel is heavier (higher oil content). With winter blended diesel adding 2 cycle oil would help bring back some of the economy lost to the light fuel.

MikeyB

;D The FAA bans just about anything that may demonstrate technological progress.

In the winter I burn 2cycle in mine with winter fuel. I use a full synthetic for a water cooled snowmobile It is marked wc on the bottle and is ash free. I have also run it in the summer but I can't say I have seen any improvement or if it runs quieter. It stands to reason that it should lube the injection pumps and injectors and upper cylanders. I also don't imagine that the EPA likes the idea of us burning oil in the diesel.
Jim O

I wish I could find the thread on the TDR about MMO, but I cant. Someone had wrote to some kind of big shot expert in the field and posted his response. He made a very convincing arguement saying it was a bad idea. Perhaps someone who is better at searching could dredge up a link. It was a long thread with input from people with credentials in the field.

When I had my old '88 Ford, the mechanic told me every two tanks to add 1/2 quart of tranny fluid to lube it up. Did that, didn't have any problems, don't know if it helped or not.

Mechanic, was A # 1

Hunter

Don't mean to get off the subject, but I disagree with mymaur. By law a dealer cannot void your warranty based on a filter. Basically a dealer cannot make you use a certain filter unless they supply it for free.

True, you can chose your own filter, but you have to use a filter that is equivalent to what the factory specifies. In this case, DC is saying the K&N is not equivalent.
