Question New Truck Questions

Hi everyone I'm new to CTD world of trucks and have few questions about my new truck that I bought this week, so here goes! First of all my truck is a 2005, 2500 4x4 SLT QC w/ 3.73 gears and a automatic tranny. Question #1- At 70 mph at about 1950 rpm I get a slight vibration kind of like a harmonic type vibration (humm, humm, humm) or drive shaft out of ballance. I've allways owned gas trucks so I 'm not sure if this normal or somethig else. #2 Should the engine run smooth at all times or will you be able to (feel) the engine at low rpm's like a pulse? I had Hemi truck until this week and I'm used to a smooth runner so any info and tips would be helpfull. Thanks: confused:

There are a couple of threads on the 70 mph vibration. Do a search on "vibration", wait....grab a beverage, then do a search as it's one of the most popular topics on the 3rd gen forums.

Welcome aboard Scott. I hope you really enjoy your new truck. It doesn't sound like you have one of the Vibrating trucks that a lot of people complain about. From what I've read it sounds like some people get their fillings rattled loose. You described exactly what my truck does, it's almost more of a noise than a vibration. You can drive at 69 or 80 but not in the 70's. My truck is actually quieter inside at 85 than at 75. Really doesn't bother me but I don't do a lot of long highway trips. I had a gasser Dodge as my prior truck also and you Definitely can feel the Cummings engine much more. At least once a day , I think my phone is vibrating in my pocket when it's not.

Thanks, to be honest with you , it is a vibration and a hum, you can feel it in the pedels and stering wheel, I didn't notice it during my test drive but then again I didn't do a bunch of 70 mph driving either. I'm kind of disapointed in that part of my new truck and from the sounds of things it's going to get worse! I've been reading all the post about this subject and it looks like the SWB 4x4 Auto w/ a steel drive shaft is the worse one of the bunch.....take guess at which truck I have. I've got a 1979 Mustang it did the same thing so I switched out the drive shaft and cured it. Sounds simple enough to me, I hope! We went to the new Cabelas store this weekend in Wheeling WV so I had alot of time to get aquainted with my new truck and its vibrating/hum. On the good side, the trip computer said I got 18.6 mpg !

Im not sure what the long term problems will come of it. Will it eat the U-Joints? Mine does it as well. It has either gotten better or i have just gotten use to it. It doesnt seem to be as bad now.

How many miles do you have on it?

If over 500 then run it like you stole it over 2500rpm in overdrive for 10-20 miles.

No promises but it worked for me and no vibrations since

If it is in fact a drive shaft balance problem, they usually don't happen at just one speed, and it'll grow progressively worse at higher speed. Since I would assume that he's not driving in 4 wheel drive @70mph the front drive shaft should not be turning major rpms. Therefore very little chance of vibration.

With mine I atribute the minor vibration to the CTD finally wearing the rings into the cylinders correctly after the initial 500 miles. My solution is run it. Heat all of those new parts up on a long road trip once or twice, kick it into 4x4 and drive it around for a while to heat up the front ujoints, gears and drive line. That is why the owners manual tells you not to tow anything for the first 500 miles and then tow only 50mph for the next 500 miles.

Mine's really starting to smooth out almost 3,500k miles now so don't let this vibration issue turn you off of buying a Dodge!

Someone else told me to run it hard like that and maybe it would help out with the problem. I don't see how it would help but hey, stranger things has happened before so when I get a chance I'll try it!
