New pinion seal...OUCH!
I noticed an oil spot under the truck monday. Come to find out it is coming from the front gear shaft. The pinion seal was leaking bad. I have 41k miles so far and have not used my 4x4 a whole lot. Just can't believe the seal would go bad so fast. Took it to the dealer yesterday to have it fixed and walked out paying $249.00. OUCH!!!!!!!

53 I do all of my own maintenace too. It just turns out the day before the Thanksgiving holiday is one of my busiest of the year as well as Fri and Sat. just did not have the time to fix it. Heck i even employ a full time disel mech. I did not want him staying late last night so he could go home to his family. The timing for the seal to go bad could not have been worse. I really did not have time to fix it myself as i need the truck all weekend. dealer charged for 2 qrts at 22.75 each, 2 hrs labor. 15.70 for shop rags and enviro fees. and 21.70 for the seal. I know I am gripeing, but yeah this sucks right before the Holidays.....

Yeah, I argued that too. They get 77.45 per hr. said it was def a 2hr job. I tried to have the SM reduce it to 1 hr. No luck. Then I asked to have him grease the universals. Can you believe the tech said he could not as they are sealed.....

I just had mine replace on my 04 with 19k. I could hear a cluncking sound when I would make a sweeping turn. This all started @ 13k mechanic said it was supposed to make that noise. kept driving it until I could no longer stand the noise. Took it in for the 3 rd time and said it needs to be fixed and it is not a normal noise. while they had it up on the rack they replaced the front drive shaft and the u-joints.

Good lord they do get you coming and going, don't they? I barely use 15 bucks worth of rags in two weeks (mobile wrench) Glad you got 'er squared away before you lost the front diff, anyway--and all w/out keeping your diesel tech late on a holiday---you 'da man!

what i wonder is why it took them 2 hrs to change a seal???
pretty easy job really.
i would thing the seal is around 20 bucks or so. what oil did they put in your diff, sounds like a costly oil, probably wasn't even synthetic either.
mine has been leaking for about 4 months now.i just got the seal, and i am going to mark the nut to the yoke, to the housing, so when i pull it off, pry the seal out, replace with new one, big socket of seal driver to install, and then replace the yoke and nut back to the same spot it came from, this way, i don't over tighten, and cruch the collar, or under tighten.
this is how they do it at the local tranny shop.
PS, that was pretty good of you to let your tech go for his holiday and not keep him there late that night. wish i had a boss like that!!!
