While I understand the principle of the whole thing that a dealer should honor the warranty and the lift pump is part of the engine. That being said if you plan on keeping the truck long term go with an aftermarket that has better filtration option and be done with it. Maybe I am just jaded from having to have injectors rebuilt. My lift pump went south about 70k miles. Put in a GDP and never been happier. Just wish at the time I had went with the 2 micron setup but I thought dodge wouldn't be so stupid as to provide poor fuel filtration against bosch recommendations at the price of injectors. Then there is the whole ULSD thing. Bite the bullet and go aftermarket and know you have a better system with better chance of your injectors living a long happy life.

 

I have my 2006 warranty book in front of me and I stand by my post above that the Cummins warranty ends at 5 years or 100,001 miles unless you have and extended warranty that goes beyond the 5/100K.

Like I said, I do believe after 04.5 when the Lift Pump was moved to the tank, the truck warranty would cover it,not the Cummins warranty, and I admit I am only going by what others have said about the newer warranty wording.
That being said, you can see how clear they were in 1997 about the Cummins warranty starting after the 3/36 Truck warranty, and I have read it for myself for the 99 and 2002 MY trucks........

 

Have no way to post a copy. On page one is a graph page and it showed the Cummins warranty starting the same day as the 3/36. Also on page 5 is where it states in print that the warranty is only good for 5 years or 100K on the odometer whichever comes first. I did another look and do not see the lift pump on the list of things covered by the Cummins warranty, it may or may not be covered for 7/70 if you live in the state of CA under the CA emission coverage..

Page 11 sec. 2.3 paragraph A says, the first purchaser is covered for 7/100,000. If the second purchaser has paid the $150 transfer fee within 30 days of purchase the coverage remains 7/100,000. If the transfer fee has not been paid the coverage becomes 5/100,000. Page 12 sec. 2.3 paragraph C reads, The cummins diesel limited warranty begins at the end of the 36/36,000 witchever comes first. The LP on my 04.5 crapped out at 98,333 on 1-19-10. I"m within the 7/100,000. How do you get the dealer to cry uncle. $940 is a big hit. Don"t mean to pour salt in an old sore. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is the lift pump listed as a covered part in your warranty book? In mine its not, the only thing covered by the Cummins warranty for the fuel system is the injectors and fuel injection pump, so unless its a listed part or you have a Dodge 7/100 warranty your out of luck.

had mine go south at about 97k and took it to the dealership. they explained it wasn't under warranty and that the in-tank replacement was over 1k. told them to get bent and that i would find the LP somewhere else. The service manager told me that it would just go out again and i explained some simple economics to him. That if I replaced it every 100k, which took me 5 years to get to, at $150 each, and BTW it took less than 1 hour, it would be years before I approached the 1k he was quoting me. Now i just keep a spare on-hand...

 

Yours would not be because your LP was factory installed in the fuel tank.

Put a draw straw and a FASS or eqv. on and forget about it.

 

The way I read it Patdaly is from your scan, on the left side of the page, the warranty says:

" These limits are counted from the time when your Basic Warranty begins"

And we all know your basic warranty begins the day you take ownership.

Just because the Cummins warranty begins when your Dodge warranty ends, that doesn't mean the warranty EXTENDS an additional 100,000 miles. The next line CLEARLY states (2.6 part B) covered for 5 years or 100,000 miles.

Look at it this way: If you bought your truck as a collector vehicle, and say all you did was drive it home. You put 10 miles on it. The Dodge warranty would end in 36 months, the Cummins warranty would end at 60 months. You don't add 5 years onto 3 years and end up with an 8 year warranty. Same with mileage.

 

Before my LP failed, there used to be a candy bar sized "thing" on the fuel filter bowl facing the firewall. Got my truck back and someone ate the candy bar and replace it with a metal plate and a hose. There is also new wiring on my bat. and what looks like a relay on the inner fender. Does this mean a snowball does have a chance in hell?

 

Are you sure your truck is an 04.5 and not an 04? I thought that the 04.5 got the in-tank and the new canister. The 04 got the retro in-tank kit and removal of the "candy bar" with the plate installed. Maybe not, just curious.

 

05 was the start of the in-tank pumps.

 

Actually, the part you describe is 2.5, which is the Federal Emission Warranty, and that DOES start at the in service date. The Diesel trucks got a 5/100 and the Gassers got a 5/50. That Warranty is covered by Chrysler, the Warranty on the Cummins is from Cummins, Dodge just does the work.

I stand by my assertion, and if mine was still in the 8/136, I would be lawyering up if denied.

Has anyone ever gotten warranty work on the 8/136 warranty? I'd like to know. Some dealers are pretty good about that....

I can understand how it can be read two ways. I'm old enough to know which way Dodge and Cummins were thinking....
