Lift Pump Purchase?

I have been reading the "Lift Pump Woes" thread and have tried to purchase a lift pump to carry as a spare. I went to two different Cummins dealers and gave them the Cummins part number 4089602. One gave me the price of $408.00 the other $335.00 and they said I also need part number 3969705 $30.00.

Can someone tell me if these prices are reasonable and/or where can I buy one? After seeing these prices I was to scared to go to a Dodge dealer. I think the pump is a "STAR" regulated part so I probably could not buy it there anyway?? Any help appreciated.

Jay

I called Dodge and they wanted 399.99, and would not sell it right out. They had to look at the vehicle and determine the old one is bad before they would sell it/install it. Cummins wanted 339.99 and said it required a hose that was 15.99.

I just installed the new FASS, pump only setup. It was well under $400 from Rip Rook at Source Automotive.

Don't buy another stock one! Get either a FASS or Diesel Dynamics has a kit as well.

For the '03 here are the p/n's directly from my Cummins parts book...

3957922 Pump Assy

3957923 Pump
3964552 O-ring
3958166 Supply line

This pump should only be about $150/$190 from Cummins which was half of what Dodge wanted for one.

Thanks for all the help and info. I'm starting to think like you all and considering seriously going aftermarket. After all why pay $300-400 for more OEM junk.

If I could find one priced around $150-200 I would probably go for that.
$300-400 is just absurd!

Gypsyman, the Cummins dealer I talked to said the 4089602 number was an updated number/part. Do you know if this is correct or crap?

Thanks again to all.

I just got off the phone with my freind on swing shift. The p/n the dealer gave you is correct and yes, the p/n has been superceded to 4089602 and they go for $307.02 from Cummins NW. He did a national parts search for the old number and came up empty. Looks like Cummins has jumped on the price gouging wagon also.

What about Scotty's new lift pump retrofit kit using the Holley Blue series electric pump?

Guy I know has a '99, he paid $76 for his lift pump from a local freightliner dealer. Not sure if pumps are same or not, but some of those prices mentioned are outrageous.
