leaking valve to fuel filter canister

I read a while back on a post to have the motor running and open the valve on the fuel filter canister to "flush it out" to hopefully get it to drain faster. I tried that. Didn't work, and now it's leaking real slow but enough to get all over the front differential. I tried breaking the valve open again with the motor running today, just to see what happens. Anyone replaced one of these before? Looks like 4 star screws and a lot of know how. Anyone??

thanks Jamie

Mine did the same thing, although I didn't open the valve with the engine running. Had to take it in for warranty work. There was an early 2003 TSB regarding grease plugging the water drain & I think it mentions opening the valve with the engine running to clear the obstruction, but I read somewhere that you do not want to open the valve while the engine is running. I don't remember the reasons why, but they do not recommend doing it.

I would just open valve and cycle key to run lift pump that should take care of your problem. Mine would not let any fuel out at all when I first got it and that is how I fixed it , your problem may just be a little grease or dirt stuck in the valve.

Called dealer and they don't know if the valve housing is replacable or if the whole canister has to be replaced!!

It's still leaking. Wonder if this would fall under the 7 year 70K miles drive train warrenty?

it is part of the fuel system, which is part of the engine. so the engine/drivetrain warrenty should cover it, but the deductable is there too... a hose barb and ball valve clamped into the drain end would be an east/cheap fix as long as the hose by the yellow valve can hold up to lift pump pressure

Put something like an empty 2 liter bottle under the hose or have someone hold it there. Open the drain valve. Do you get fuel trickling out? If not, while someone is keeping the bottle on the hose, just turn the ign. to the 'ON' position but don't start it. The pressure from the pump should start the fuel flowing quickly. It should stop leaking after you clean it out a little. Don't open the valve with the engine running or you will get a big mess.

no different the flow if the engine is running or dead with the ignition in the run/on position... only difference is the lift pump will be running at ±14vdc instead of ±12.6vdc

The difference is the pump runs for a limited time if the engine is not running.

Plus it is safer for guy holding bottle ,my guess there is just a little dirt stuck in valve and that will fix it. I just do it on drive way over some weeds I don't want and kill 2 birds with one stone.
