High Idle Question - '03 SO Manual
High Idle Question - '03 SO Manual
I've been noticing that most times when I push in the clutch and come to a complete stop, my engine will idle high....say around 1200 rpm's and stay there. It's normally below 1000 rpm's at idle....i think around 1800 or 1600 (can't remember which). It's not happening every time, but i experience it at least 2-3 times every day. I can put it in 1st, let out the clutch, and let it roll a couple of feet and idle will come back down to where it's supposed to be and everything is fine.
Does anyone know what this may mean? I have a Quad XZT that I've been running for around 20,000 miles and even took it to Quad to have checked out. He said everything looked good. We put it back in the truck and the next stop light i came to, the truck idled fine, but started shaking. I need to take it back to him again.
Anyway, I can't make the truck duplicate the high idle situation w/o the XZT, but if it checked out fine, what else could it be? Any ideas?
Thanks,
Brian

Did you put some dielectric grease on the XZT connectors like Quad recommends?
Only other thing I can think of is the APPS (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor) is acting up, but it shouldn't have any relationship with the XZT.

Dielectric grease?? Nope! They didn't tell me anything about that stuff and a guy from Quad even installed it himself the last time I was there. Do you just put it on the connectors in the engine compartment or do you also put some on the wires that connect to the box itself?
Mine left me sitting on the side of the road four times before I finally went and bought a new APPS. I never got around to putting it on though and the truck stopped doing it. So, if it turns out to be your APPS I've got a brand new one that I'll make you a good deal on.
Symptoms of a bad or failing APPS (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor) include high idle, dead pedal or both.
I don't know about the shaking. Every once in a while mine will do that to for no apparent reason and then it will go away just as quickly as it came.
I've also noticed over the past few days that occasionally my truck will idle at about 850 rpm instead of the usual 700 rpm. Don't really know what that is either.
I've never had the go-pedal go dead, just the RMP's don't come down to normal all the time. I'm not sure how the truck knows, but if i'm doing a speed like say 20mph or higher and I push in the clutch, the RPM's stay high until the truck slows down to around 10mph, and then the RPM's go down to normal. I still don't know how that works!
I haven't had the shaking problem since that one day after putting the XZT in, but i'm still seeing the high idle....in fact it happened again when I pulled into work this morning!
I'll try the dielectric grease, but I have a feeling that it's something else....like the APPS that you mention Hoss.
Should I trust a dealer to look at it or just keep driving?

Keep driving!!
Seriously though, if it does turn out to be your APPS then talk to me before you go to the dealer to get the part. Since both of our trucks are '03 models it should be the same part I bought for my truck and never used.

Hum,
Just noticed that my 03 SO, now that its cold out, if left standing for say around 4-5 mins, will go into a high idle like mode. Hit the pedal and it comes back down.
I've been told time and again that the 03s DO NOT have the high idle feature. Which I guess is true. NO update can install it on an 03.
But is this automatic high idle happening because its supposed to?
Or is it really an issue that needs attention?

No, it's supposed to.....well, mine has done it since it was bought in the fall of 2002. But this is not the issue I'm describing. My issue is coming from driving around and when I push in the clutch to come to a stop, my RPM's are not coming down. The truck will be at normal operating temp and everything, but the idle doesn't come back down.
Your truck is fine kutch.

You can NOT manually enable the high idle on an '03 like you can on the later model trucks, but it DOES have a high idle feature that kicks in when certain conditions are met (you can read what those conditions are in your owner's manual). When you hit the throttle or the brake or the clutch it should return to the normal idling RPM.
