High idle?
High idle?
Have read numerous posts on here about a "high idle" feature being enabled/disabled. Never heard of this. I did a forum search for "high idle" because my 06 wants to automatically raise idle to 1000 RPM after 2 minutes (about) of sitting at 700 +/- normal RPM. It will go up to 1000 every time you let truck idle, cold, warm or after driving for hours. Is this normal? Is this part of the "fast idle" feature I have read about , or something entirely different?
That does not seem right. Your automatic high idle should come on when it's cold outside like below 35 degrees or so(not sure on the exact temp?) but not when it warm. Mine has only come on once when I started up in the morning and it was in the low 20's. That is very strange that it comes on even after driving for hours unless your outside air temp is really cold then it will still come on even if your truck is warm.
Opps I misead post.At what OUTSIDE temps does yours jump to 1000 rpm? Mine yesterday did as you described. It was COLD if idled any lenghth of time kept going to the 1000 rpm and I'm in Georgia. All 3rd generations do what yours does if engine temp drops to low.The MANUAL high idle is a ramp up high idle at ANY temp thats turned on through the cruise control buttons.Turn cruise on,don't touch brake pedal and hit accel button. It will increase rpm's by a 100 to a max of 1400 I think. As well as warmup it allows ac to stay on in high temps with doors locked while stopping for breaks etc.to prevent cylinder wash down and other benifits. On AUTO trucks its just a ENABLE with a star scan tool.On 6 speeds reguires another clutch switch or a pin bypass at the ecm.Do a SEARCH tons of reading on the subject. This feature does NOT exist on 03/04 models.
The manual high idle runs as described by HoundDog and allows to manually adjust the idle from 1100rpm to 1500rpm.
The automatic high idle will come on at any temperature. It just comes on quicker when it is cold. I have started my truck when it is at or near 0* and it goes up to 1000rpm immediately. I have also had it kick on when it is 90* out. It just takes a little longer to kick on. As HoundDog described, it is a preventative function of the ECM to allow full combustion of the fuel and prevent problems.
I think I read about this in the owners manual. It is normal.

Hounddog , Thanks for the info. It does it at any outside temp. - It has been in the teens and 20's mostly for the last few weeks - Always ramps up after approx. 2 min. at "regular" idle - Can this feature be manually turned off?

You can't turn off the automatic high idle, well I guess you can by stepping on the brake pedel every 2 minutes when it kicks on. I also would not want to shut it off because like djbikeman said it allows for complete combustion, in other words it helps prevent wet stacking.
Why would you want to turn it off ? Its programed to do this for a reason.Yesterday was 32 here in the a.m. and mine on start up was 1000 rpm.I LIKE the feature.Just wish I could have the RAMP up feature also.I've going to rig a manual pull cable just haven't gotton around to it.
I don't think anyone mentioned, but the self-idle-up preprogrammed in the software will also bring the idle back down as necessary. Usually in warmer outside temps, you'll notice it. When it's cold out, the duration while idled up is longer, for obvious reasons.
Once forced into manual-high-idle, if enabled, the idle will stay indefinately at whatever RPM you set it at within the parameters of its capability.
On a side note, any Chrystler authorized service department with a DRBIII may enable the manual-high-idle feature. I had my local Jeep dealer, with whom I'vd done business with for quite some time and whom employs a previous generation one and generation two mechanic, perform it. It literally takes less than two minutes if the tech is familiar with the option menus on the DRB screen.
