G56

Is this 6-speed any good , everybody keeps saying the nv5600 is alot better and the g56 is already maxed out and will fail with its dmf. any opinions would be appreciated.

Generally, they seem to be fine. People have had failures with both transmissions, and personally, I see no evidence that the g56 has failed much more than the 5600.

Both are respected transmissions. The NV5600 had a long, successful history and developed a subculture of non-Dodge owners buying just the tranny to swap into their own trucks. At the beginning of 2005 Dodge started using a Mercedes-designed medium-duty manual called the G56 instead, which reportedly caused the NV5600 to completely cease production.

I have the G56 and it's been great so far. Despite our trucks saying "Heavy Duty" on the back they're considered "light duty" to the automotive industry ("medium duty" refers to things larger than our trucks and smaller than full over-the-road semi's). Mercedes makes some serious trucks, and the G56 was designed for medium-duty applications. As just one indicator of that: The G56 has two dedicated PTO ports, one on each side, for the mounting of things like hydraulic pumps. PTO's (even one, let alone TWO) are not exactly something you find on light-duty trannies OR trucks.

The G56 has been around a while, shipping in MB's own medium-duty trucks, so it has some years and miles behind it. You're not a beta site for some Detroit experiment.

Since Mercedes designed the G56 for medium-duty service, I feel VERY comfortable with it in my "light" duty truck.

I dont tow much if any, and I only have 12,000 miles on it, but I will be the first to say, I LOVE MY G56. Its perfect for me. I think its a goo combo of gears. Somewhat of a close range trans. I love it.

You best not get a nv5600. They do nothing but rattle (and pull of course)

I have a late 05 with a G56
The drivetrain has a loud rattle at idle in neutral with the clutch out sometimes but it seems like it is less frequent lately usually depressing clutch and releasing stops the noise.
The ratio sucked with the factory donut 245/70/17s
The raion is perfect with 285/70/17s on factory aluminum wheels.

I too have a slight noise when in neutral with the clutch out, but it's more of a humming sound - definitely not a rattle. Pushing in the clutch stops it. I haven't worried about it because there are different things moving when the clutch is out, so "extra" sounds would be expected.

I have a rattle in 5th gear from about 1500 rpm to about 2200 rpm annoying took to dealer and said thats normal ?? when i put my southbend clutch in i think i am going to take a peak on the inside and see if i notice anything, I talked to peter at sbc and he said they are solid unit and have had some bearing issues but only in high mile 80k and up that tow everyday. we agreed that adding a good synthic trans fluid was a good idea. all i can say is so far so good, jr

My truck makes the same sound when in neutral, a humming noise but not bad. I found if you push the stick up a little or pull it back and leave it that the noise stops.HPWAY what is your tach reading at 65 mph ?

He means year 2005, not model year 2005. My 2005 ram, built January 2005, has the NV. The date on the Cummins is 1/11. It was probably one of the last NV equipt CTD's.

anybody running 35's with the G56 and 373's? the G56 feels like 410's , I guess thats why they don't offer the 410's with the 6spd.
