couple of rear main seal install questions

Im planning on doing this tommorrow, What am i in for? I know the trans needs to be pulled and that doesnt seem to be a big deal. Can i put this new seal in without pulling the bellhousing?

As far as i know it can be done by just pulling the trans and flex plate off

You must be referring to the adapter plate on the back of the engine. No, you don't have to remove it. After you get the flex plate off, you can just drill or punch a small hole in the metal body of the seal, then thread a sheet-metal screw in a couple threads and lever it out with a pair of side cutters.

I'd go ahead and replace the cam seal as well. It's just a o-ring with an inspection cover over it. They are very prone to leak and while it's down that far whats another 2 bucks.

I’ve read on here that there is a square o-ring seal between the trans adapter and the back of the engine. I guess it seals around the back of the camshaft or something. Guys say this can leak too.

When I installed my SB I but a new rear main seal in, but didn’t know about the o-ring. I now have a leak back there somewhere. I’m not sure if I got a bad new seal or put it in out of alignment or if that o-ring has let go.

So have a close look around back there. If you take the adapter plate off maybe you can take some pix for us?

No, I have done many of these (although never a third gen) and the Cummins instructions are very clear about stating that both parts must be clean and dry upon installation. No lubricant is to be added. I am not aware of that changing on the third gen truck.

As far as replacing the camshaft o-ring, I have not had the experience of one leaking so I won't advise either way.

If you have a framing (claw) hammer with fairly straight hooks, it works great on prying on the head of the screws you put into the seal.
