Adjusting the valves?

Well, My truck has 118,000 miles on it and i've heard rumors of people getting the valves adjusted on their trucks after a while. My question is can I do it, and if I can should I wait or do it soon. I like my truck and want to be very good to it.

I am the third owner of my truck and don't know if the previous owners went this far into the maintenance thing.

PS: I don't think anything is wrong, just being cautious.

If the gap is within range (Intake is 0.006 to -.015 and exhaust is 0.015 to 0.030 with cold engine) then no adjustment is needed... If out of that range, then set intake at 0.010 and exhaust to 0.020.

Remove the valve cover, rotate the engine with a barring tool or by the alternator pulley until the TDC mark on the damper is at 12 o'clock.

If both #1 valves are loose then #1 is between compression and power stroke, so adjust intake on 1, 2 and 4 and exhaust on 1, 3 and 5. Feeler gauge goes between the rocker arm socket and the crosshead.

If both valves on #1 are not loose it's in overlap between exhaust stroke and intake, so you adjust intake on 3, 5, 6 and exhaust on 2, 4 and 6...

Then rotate the engine 360 and do whichever group you didn't do...

My guess is that you will find none out of range, but for peace of mind I'd check them...

Do the CTD valves have locknut style adjusters?

Yes.
Personally I would go ahead and set all to 0.010 and 0.020 even if they where in spec.

Was that a 'yes' to my question?

If so, I'm surprised they stay in adjustment so long.

Make sure you guys get a barring tool so you can get the engine in position to be able to do the valve lash adjustments.

Yeah, that's probably what I'd do, too, but I thought I'd post what the bookk says.... that as long as they are within range there is no benefit to performance, noise or fuel economy to be gained by messing with them.

If you do adjust one, after adjusting tighten the lock nut to 18 ft/lbs and recheck lash.
