03 Lift pump

I have an early model 03 RAM 2500 QC HO CTD long box. The lift pump is up either in or by the filter housing. I am looking to installing the in the tank lift pump from www.makeitmopar.com part number 5086498AB which I believe is an actual Mopar number. I have a few questions. Is it necessary to remove or disable the original fuel pump? The deconnect on the current sending unit in the tank has 4 wires, I know that 2 of the wires are for the sending unit. I presume that the other two wires are 12VDC and ground. Is the 12VDC wire live or do I have to put a fuse or a relay in the under hood fuse block? Does this replacement assembly come with the fuel screen as mine has a tear in it? Thanks for any help you can give me.

just a question, but why would you want to do this????
it is a pain in the *** to get at the pump once installed in the tank.
i think that is a bad move myself, and i would run an after market pump on the frame rail or some thing like that, where it gets air flow, and alot less vibs, then say mounted on the engine like the factory style.
i only bring this up because i have a friend that did that mod, as a dielse shop told him it was "better" and it wasn't any better, and now he has to remove the tank, in his drive way, to get at the pump.
just my 2 cents

pullin hard,
Okay, point well taken. I'm not interested in spending the money for a F.A.S.S. or Air Preparator. What pump would you recommend? Also do I have to remove the OEM filter pump? If not what happens if fuel filter pump fails?

An alternate would be the BD Performance lift pump kit p/n 1050227. This kit replaces the OEM lift pump with a Carter unit that mounts to the frame rail. A flange adapter is used in place of the original pump. About $270 or so.

Jury is still out, but I haven't run into any probs with the in tank unit. The filter mounted one has been dropping at a rate equal to the VP trucks 98-2002.

keep an eye on it, i hope you don't have to go through the trouble my friend did.
anyway, not sure if the in tank pump would have to be removed. but you don't have that yet. i think you just plumb the new to you pump, and splice it in line, which will by pass the stock pump, but i think it will still go through the factory filter. this is my plan anyway, since i bought a case of fuel filters, and change them every 7000-8000miles.
the pump that i bought, which i pm you about, has all the wiring and stuff needed to make it work.

The Mopar in tank pump kit comes with a block (these blocks are just a chunk of steel with a passage drilled through and mounts for original location) to take the place of the original engine mounted pump. This is the only change to the fuel lines at all, you still use the filter. There are 2 different blocks, one for 2nd gen and one for 3rd gen. They retain the original quick connects and banjo bolts.
The kit should include a wiring harness that takes 12v battery power and runs it through a relay to the bulkhead connector under cab at the drivers floor. The relay is energized by a connector to the original pump connector.
The intank pump is installed (I have always just dropped the drivers bed bolts and loosened the pass bolts to raise the bed to get to the pump, unless you have a gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch) IN PLACE of the original sender level sensor.
That is all, bleed the fuel system and your done.

Hope this helps with some of your questions.

MikeyB this looks like the best option for me. Does any one know the part number for the replacement filter screen for the tank gauge sending unit and fuel pickup for a 35 gallon 2003 tank? The number I got from the Dodge dealer parts department here is for a square filter used with the gassers. They thought the gasser and the diesel were the same which seemed like a reasonable thought, but a wrong one. Mine is round and a lot bigger. Unfortunately mine has a tear in it which I noticed installing a Transfer Flow frame tank. I was also amazed at the amount of gunk that the screen caught. It looked like brown snot and quite alot of it. Thanks for the good info.

You should read the Walbro fuel pump threads to make an informed pump purchase choice first, if you haven't already.

Anyone know if you can purchase the Dodge block to bypass the original filter mounted pump seperately from the rest of the kit?

I tried today and I would have had to purchase the whole kit with pump and all.
