Strange smell in cab (Not me)
When I turn on the AC in my truck, there is a musty odor coming from the vents. Asked the service department over the phone about it and they said it was common and that they need to clean/empty out that gets mildewy. Forgot what that "something" was. Haven't had time to take it in. Has anyone else experienced this and attempted to fix it themselves?

Thanks

I may be mistaken, but I thought I saw a TSB out on this one.

The smell is from condensation that allows a mold to grow. It is this mold that you are smelling.

I also remember a post stating that if you run just the vent after you run the A/C, this can cause the condensation to dry up and thus, no mold.

If I can find the TSB, I'll post it here.

Rich.

This occurs on too many vehicles to count. I have seen it lots of times over the years, on all different makes and models. You'll want to make sure your drain tube is clear. Sometimes bugs make nests in there and clog thigs up.
DieselDaze's idea about running the vent is a good idea.

Chris
Re:Strange smell in cab (Not me)
One solution to try is to extend the condensate drain hose down and back up under the cab - apparently the turbulent air under the truck can force the condensate back up the tube and cause it to pool in the evaporator housing. By putting an extension on the drain hose and aiming it toward the rear of the truck the airflow will help to suck out the condsensate.

Running the vent for a minute or two before shutdown also helps dry out the evaporator core. I turn mine over to vent when I come off the main highway - the trip through the 'hood gives it time to work.

If the smell doesn't go away there is a cleaner they can spray in the housing that foams up and kills the crud on the fins and then gets blown or vacuumed out. AC shop can probably tell you how well that works and the cost.

Re:Strange smell in cab (Not me)
Thanks y'all.
Since the truck is still under warranty, I am going to take it to the dealer and let them clean it out at the next oil change. After that, I will follow the suggestions of running the vents for a while and possibly extending the drain hose.

Rob

Re:Strange smell in cab (Not me)
I read somewhere (maybe even on this board) about spraying a can of Lysol into the fresh air intake while running the a/c... haven't tried it but it sounds like a cheap possible solution, but most likely a temporary one.
Greg
