mysterious button?

I recently purchased a 1998 1 ton and am confused about a button. Does anyone know what the button on the bottom of the rearview mirror does?? i've tried it several times at different times of day and temp, but nothing happens! Thanks for filling in for my ignorance

If it's like the one on my 2002, it turns the mirror's auto-dimming feature on and off.

Geesh, weve explained this to you before!

Your not suppose to look into the flash when you push the button!

When it is "on" it should be lit, faintly though, and usually takes a minute or so for the dimming crystals to align themselves to where you notice a difference, usually a green tint added to the lights behind you.

Way to test it... There is a eye on the front (windshield side) of the mirror. Cover the eye with your finger. Turn the dimmer feature on. The mirror should turn dark before your eyes!

Remember the key has to be ON not ACC mode.

I've had fun with Mom's truck doing this... Just another thing to play with!

Has anyone had their button break? Mine will not lock in the "on" position.

I guess if no one knows, I will look into a new one. Hopefully boneyard, as I don't think the added benefit will be worth what the dealer will want for it.

I'm not sure how your button is but the one on my 2004 doesn't lock, it's just a temporary push in. I think it's turned on and off by the computer really, and the button just gives it a signal? I could be wrong

They might have changed the design there...

Mom's 1996 Dodge the button locks in the on or off positions... Click In and Click Out...

Or...

Like your (Jack) saying the about the push button. Like My 02 for heat mirrors. Push the button but it don't click. Kinda like the power switch on your computer (PC)...

That would be odd... But you never know with DC...

If you have tinted rear windows it is harder to notice the mirror working at night.
