Re:BHAF

Here is my heat sheild I just made this morning, took all of five minutes. I used some flashing because it is 1) easy to work with, 2) readily avaible, 3) looks good, 4) easy to work with. I don't know if it well work because it is flimsy, and I don't have my truck it is in the shop. But I well give it a shot and see how it works, if it don't oh well I well just make another one. My flashing was just a bit narrow, but I think it well work!

Re:BHAF

If I recall correctly, you are supposed to use at least 18 gauge galvanized or stainless. I used galvanized for mine, and it seems to work well as far as I can tell.

Re:BHAF

I installed my BHAF this weekend also.

I haven't installed the heat shield yet and I am thinking about cutting the hole in the cowl also. I want to make sure that I cut it according to Scotty's directions so when I upgrade , I won't have holes all over the place.

The turbo whine is more noticeable in the cab and there seemed to be a little more throttle response ;D. However, I am not sure how much of the throttle response is a result of the BHAF because I also changed the oil and fuel filters at the same time. I don't have gauges yet so I can't tell if it dropped the EGT's.

I will be leaving this weekend for a trip to Missouri and Arkansas so I will see if it helped with fuel economy. With the price of Diesel right now, I'll take anything!!!

Another question that came to mind while I was doing this is what is the interval for changing the BHAF? I would assume it would last longer than the stock one but how much longer? I was going to do the 4" to 3" PVC reducer so I could in stall the Filter Minder, but my Filter Minder isn't working anyway. :

FWIW, there is alot of good information in this thread that would make a great FAQ .

Re:BHAF

I had my BHAF on for 30,000 miles and it still looked good on the inside. I probably could have gone further, but what the hay. When I changed it to the new one, my mileage didn't increase either.

Mike

Big Honkin Air Filter

NAPA 2790 is the usual one - but you can cross reference that p/n to a number of filter manufacturers.

These guys are pretty cheap: www.fleetfilter.com
