BHAF or K&N Dropin??????????
BHAF or K&N Dropin??????????
I will be making a trip to the cummins dealer tomorrow to purchase my fleetgaurd oil/fuel filters, and I also need to change my air filter. Should I buy a K&N? or Should I try to add a BHAF? if BHAF, what all do I need? what are the part numbers?
Re:BHAF or K&N Dropin??????????
I use a K&N, Cost about $60 at Auto ZOne. I'm happy, got nearly 2 MPG more with it. But others will prefer the BHAF. I have no idea what they cost.

Part number for the K&N is easily fond in their catalog at the store.

Gary

hello all first time on this site. got my BHAF at napa #2790 list for about $54.00 i believe. but make a good imprestion, and ask for a discount, if possable. it lowered my egt's by about 100* also a little better spool up. also the 4" exahust lowered the temps also. cummins also carries a BHAf. check it out while there.

Niv.

Re:BHAF or K&N Dropin??????????
your right, it is the choice of the owner, i tried the K&N, and also done some mods on the air box to lower the egt temps to get more air. and found by going to the BHAF, (i fashioned my own shield) that i was able to run a bit cooler. i was just looking for all the advantages that i could. it works for me.

Marv.
Re:BHAF or K&N Dropin??????????
I went ahead and bought a K&N today and put it in. I was careful to not put too much grease around the sealing edges, and the filter did not look like it had been overly oiled. The filter cost $67.99. I chose the K&N filter because I think with all the dirtroad/offroad driving I do it will be better in the stock case. I can't notice much difference, but the turbo is a little louder (with silencer ring off). Hopefully I will not find any oil on my turbo... :

K&N is probably not a good choice for offroading & dust. After a few thousand miles check the intake behind the filter - you might see dirty oil (if over oiled). If not oiled enough, though, the particulate matter might be getting sucked into your engine.

Every now & again I get on here and remind people my K&N story... my former roommate in college now works for BFG Aerospace in Minneapolis. His company was contracted to do "media testing" for Donaldson filters - the K&N media was includeed in the test. He said that K&N was really bad when new, but a lot better (at filtration) once it "loaded up." He confirmed it flowed more air for a given vacuum - but that's because it let larger particles through... Anyways, he knew I ran K&Ns for a long time on my cars, so he quickly advised me and I stopped using them. I keep begging him to give me some data that I can post it - but he's too ****, the data is proprietary, etc. He pointed out that there are a number of filter media manufacturers that make filters that flow higher CFM than we'd ever need (ok, most of us would never need) with more effective media than ANY automotive applications.

Is anyone looking at filtration media made for construction eqiupment? Are all those oil-bath, cartridge style ones? I'm not a filtration expert... but I know I need something soon (just did fiorst upgrade, DD3s) because my own intake is insufficient now...
Re:BHAF or K&N Dropin??????????
As you have already switched to the K&N, good luck with it. I switched from an AFE drop-in, which I ran for 18 months, to a Scotty 2 and given my mods, may be one of my wiser choices in some not-so-wise choices. Excellent reduction in EGT's.
Re:BHAF or K&N Dropin??????????
i popped a k&n in about a month ago, it seemed to improve throttle response from a dead stop a bit or maybe i'm just fooling myself to justify an $80.00 air filter..just my 2 cents..seems to be a love or hate thing w/ the k&n..some say it allows too many particles past..
