To BHAF or not to BHAF
To BHAF or not to BHAF
As per my sig, I have an AFE filter; My stock airbox is cut wide open except at the bottom; I reamed out the hole under my parking light and put a larger air duct than the factory duct. So, it's not a true cold air intake, but I'm still pulling some fresh air in. My question is this; Does anyone have figures on cfm's on a stock size aftermarket oiled gauze filter versus a paper BHAF? The BHAF is obviously bigger but does it flow more air than a smaller K&N style filter? I'm thinking about making an intake hose "Cooler Tubz" style, maybe with parts from Airflo (aluminum tube and rubber elbow, etc. Any opinions on the BHAF vs. a smaller oiled filter?

I think the best route is a amsoil nanofibre filter. The initial cost of buying one is a bit more than other filters but you can reuse it. All you do is blow it out with an air compressor and you're good to go. They are rated for 100k miles or something I think. If you buy one, I'd get the matching prefilter to go with it. They breathe good.
I don't have the answer to either question. What I do know is it does flow really well. How well exactly I do not know. And I don't know what it's made of either, sadly.
sorry I couldn't be of more help to answer those questions. I'm sure someone on here must know...

I had a BHAF and got rid of it. Every time I took the hose off the turbo the wheel of the turbo was dirty. Also it was a major job to change out the filter. I went back to the K&N that fits the stock air box. I may someday fix the stock pot option, and go back but never the ol' smoky mount.

I've tried to find the CFM ratings on my Green Hi Performance air filter but with out any luck. I'm going to try to get the numbers on a K&Ns filter but don't expect that they will post their numbers.
I have just finished building my own air intake system. I used my GHP filter and the top of the original air box, a SS 4" piece of pipe (which I polished) and a couple of pieces of silicone intake adapters. I will start testing today to see how it works and sounds.

Take some pics of it if you can. That sounds like what I'm thinking about doing. Someone has bound to have done some cfm tests on these filters. The thing I don't like about paper is when it gets wet. I think if you oil an aftermarket filter properly, you shouldn't have to worry about sucking oil up through the intake.
Here is what I did

I have since got rid of BHAF due to turbo fins getting dirty and I have replaced it with Amsoil cone filter and pre filter bag .. and no more dirt in fins.. also I can hear turbo more with amsoil filter where before I could not with BHAF..
So I do not know if BHAF or Amsoil are better but I have not seen any difference between the 2 except cleaner fins and louder turbo

I live in the Pacific North "Wet" so it will be a good wet weather test. I feel that the lightly oiled GHP air filter will be OK.I have never had a dust or oil problem with the GPH or my old K&N - IF you oil them properly. If not then a sheild to re-direct the water will be next. I will try to post pics - hopefully this week.

I didn't get the cone one, I got the weird shaped nanofibre filter. By surface area it's the biggest one they sell with the 4" outlet size.
Oh and no dirt on teh fins means it works better and hearing the turbo could be nothing but it could be that it flows better!
The whole idea of sucking air through paper just seems really restrictive to me... I don't know.

The AmsOil filter looks like this....

PN 4510. Its larger than stock but a bit smaller than the BHAF, and its 1/4 of the weight. The BHAF is certainly a heavier duty filter.
My only complaint is that the inlet on the filter is 4.5" and my BHAF setup(i used to have a BHAF) was a 4". As you can see in the pic I have that bottleneck adapter to get the filter to work.
Granted AmsOil does carry nanofiber filters with 4" inlets but the actual size of the filter wasn't big enough for my liking. The more surface area you have on a filter the more the filter is able to trap and still perform efficiently.
Ive checked O'Rileys, NAPA, Auto Zone, Car Quest, online stores and local plumbing stores and none of them could find me a 4.5"-4" adapter.
If anyone out there knows where I can find such a thing at a reasonable price please PM me. =D
