why is the keyway specific to pump #?

I just got a new VP44 and well the keyway got damaged so I needed to order a new keyway. My old pump is an 0-4-5 and my new one is an 0-4-4. Is there a difference that would define why I cant swap the keyways??? They look EXACTLY the same size/shape.... anyone with insite please help. Thanks,

Where did you read where you couldn't swap keyways?

For optimal performance you will need the correct keyway.

The fellow at the shop I got the pump from said that the keyway's were matched to the pumps and affected the timing (I think timing). How can a little piece of metal do that??? I don't get it... lol but yeah I'll probably wait for the correct one thanks,

I'm not positive but I think it has to do with the pump being calibrated with that key in place, I cant imagine a different key making that much or a difference but I dont rebuild VP's either.

BTW, they told me the same thing when I replaced my VP as well.

I say if they are identical and they are the same thickness I would use the old one but thats me. I understand the concept but there is no way that they are hand making every key way that goes in every VP. Maybe I am wrong but it doesnt seem logical. Good luck bro

You dont understand the concept thats the problem. The key is matched to the pump. The key only goes one way on the pump it is offset.. The thickness of the keys are the same it is the offset thats critical.

The slot in the shaft and the slot in the gear are the keyways - the piece of steel with the offset is the timing key................

10-4, I don't even know about this issue but I was going to add that there is a diff. between the "keyway" and the "key".

thanks guys. Yeah I got the key *not keyway*(Haha thanks guys! ) and just put it in more carefully this time and it was not a problem. Idk on something thats kind of envolved a job like this somewhat is, I'd rather not have to re-do it so I waited. But the truck runs good so far, as it should anyway... still a little slow haha. But Thanks for your advice! Appreciate it! Haha,
