I have the opertunity to purchase a 99CTD with 110K on it.

the problem with the engine is that the block has cracked, but includes the turbo, VP44?? Is that what came on the 99's?

comes still assembled with the parts still attached, head, injector lines, valve cover still on, timing cover, lift pump, VP44?, vacuum pump, balancer...

no starter,harness,computer,flywheel,alt,or motor mounts!


whats it worth?

Not too much.

With 110K, the head is cracked to. I'll put money on that.

No ECM? No Alt.? No Starter? No Flywheel? Darn, not much there!

I have located a '93 motor. 95% complete. $1,000. Cracked block would require alot of work. Could have been overheated while the block was cracking, or could have the Oil and Water tango goin' on.

110K miles,, these motors aren't as tuff as you believe. It's a gamble.

I'd pay $500. $800 TOPS, and that's High.

Oil Changes? Coolant Maintaince? Unless this motor has had 3,000 to 5,000 mile oil changes, 2-3 year coolant changes, pulled only light loads, and was never bombed. I'd pass it up. Better deals out there.

Why spend a little money on a bad block, when you can spend some more on a good block?
Spend a dime to save a penny?

Its probably a #53 block, do you intend to fix it? If so how? The problem is that the block was too thin, so where will you go with it? I have a friend with one cracked also, is the reason for the questions.

well, i didnt realize that the head might crack also, the block is not cracked between the cylinder walls, but i guess on the side ???
i remember reading a few threads about how bombed blocks were splitting, its been along time, but something about the number "50" being stamped on the block and people were having problems with them.... i dunno, not the point of my story

anyway my point.

i was hoping to find out if the 99 has the VP44 like my H.O. 2002, and since I DO NOT know alot about the ins and outs of the cummins yet, i was hoping to use that VP44 as a core, or in case mine blew up, use it on my truck so i dont have to shell out 800 or up to 1600 for a new/ reman VP44......

sorry for all the Q's, the wire that gets tapped for the inj pump, does it actually stay with the inj pump, or is it apart of the truck harness????

ive been getting the urge to add more bombs to my truck, and the next bomb would be tapping the wire on the pump,....

and other supporting mods to keep everything in check

well, i wouldnt do much with it since the block is cracked...
if i purchased it i would just use the parts off of it to modify so i dont have any down time with my truck...

head would go to my head porter, and do a full tilt job, and use alot of the parts off this spare engine to use down the road... "if it was good"

the turbo would be used on my buddies auto CTD with the HY-35, but if its milkshake, then fuggit ta bout tit!!

i think the block would make a nice flower plant in the front yard

Look on the block and see if it is the infamous #53 block. They cracked under heavy use, I had one, a couple of friends had one. If it was not over heated badly because of the coolant loss the head is probably ok. They have a VP44 and the core charge I had was $800 from Cummins. If it is a manual engine it should be a HX35.

Where on the block do you look for the #53?

 

Best place I have found is crawl under the left front and look above the pan rail under the vacuum pump.

Yeah, 98 1/2, 99, and I think some early 2000. From the other threads, if it just has a series of small numbers it is a Mexican block and is the strongest. My #53 was replaced with a #55 in the spring of 2000.

 

aight so is it just the 53 blocks that have that problem?

 

There are others on here that could answer that better than I can but I have never heard of anything but a #53 cracking.
