Transmission Problems
I have a 99 1 ton cummins dually with an auto tranny and when i'm pullin up an on ramp, or mashin down the throttle with my 35 foot horse trailer loaded the tranny keeps jumpin back and forth between gears, it's like it can't decide which gear to pull in. We took it into a mechanic and they replaced the tps but that didn't help it and they can't figure out if it's a wiring problem or whats wrong with it. Has anyone else had problems like this??? Any help in greatly appreciated.
I got a manual tranny so I can't help much, but the first thing everybody is gonna want to know is the details of your truck. Any mods etc. If you fill in your signature you will get a lot more accurate info.
If you do a search for noise filter I think you will probably find your problem. As I said I know nothin about Auto's, but it sounds familier. It get's a little slim on members this time of the night so if your lookin for reading material tonight this search will give it to you. It's a common problem.
not necessarily so much as needing a new apps, HOWEVER, re-calibrating the existing one corrected my problem. I have a feeling they SHOULD calibrate a new one when they install it, but who knows if they really do????
The 1st 2 times I had that type shifiting problem, I took it to the "ever so sharp" dodge dealer, who re-flashed my computer and extracted my cash. Which promptly corrected my problem and gave me 2 to 3 miles per gallon less. With NO explanation as to why the worse gas mileage (or, should I say, diesel mileage).
Finally, I was on this site, last year, I decided to do the calibration thing myself before taking it to doge for the re-flash. It corrected my shifiting problem, and my fuel mileage went back up where it used to be. I was so surprized to see my fuel economy go back up there. And I was also twice as ticked off at dodge for playing (or being) so stupid about the whole thing originally. One other time a few months later the same thing happenned and I just just re-calibrated it (you know, the unhook the batteries, yaada, yada, yada thing and so on and so forth) and it was fine. These trucks have that shifting problem from time to time. I can see that from the chatting on the different web sites. But dodge is a bit idiotic on this issue.
I suppose in some of the cases, nothing short of a re-flash will do, but I believe they probably should re-calibrate the apps first.
I found that mine was shifting into OD lockup within 1 mph of shifing into last gear after the re-flash. And I distinctly remember it being sooner before the re-flash. I also remember that after I re-calibrated the apps that the "old" way of shifting came back and so did my fuel economy (my freeway mileage was always the same,....the difference came with my "around the town" driving...which is what I normally do here in l.a., you sometimes never get into last gear on the freeways due to slow traffic.

This sounds like a different prob than the "electrical noise" that causes the jtec to lock and unlock the convertor when AT CRUISE. If you are having this prob while under accell "pulling on ramp, or mashin.." I would suspect that you may be driving through the convertor clutch if you experience this at a speed that is allowing the clutch to be locked. This is definately a "hands on" prob that needs the attention of a good tech.
Ditto as JBody said, you've got more than an APPS electrical problem. Do revs go up first, then truck moves afterwards? If it is in 3rd or 4th when this shows up, it sounds like it is the torque converter lockup clutch burnt out/slipping, as this will usually show up more with a load on, than without. Does it do it in all gears, or just 3 and 4 th?
You should inspect fluid for signs of burnt oil smell/color/level from dipstick. Check your tv cable adjustment(too much play in cable will cause erratic shifting). Have bands ever been adjusted, oil and filter changed?
It could also be a bad Governor solenoid, as this will also cause it to jump in and out of all gears/erratic shifting. Check the simple things, then update your status of what you found.
