LP vs Speed Sensor
LP vs TPS
2002 with 109,000 miles is cutting out so bad it's basically undriveable. Since reading posts here I believe I need a LP because when I changed the fuel filter last time (8,000) miles ago, it took cycling the lift pump about 15 times before it primed.
I checked the codes though and got 1693 and 0122, which is apparantly the speed sensor.
Is the speed sensor going out too, or can a bad lift pump also cause this code?
I guess I should get the LP from Cummins? There is a Cummins shop nearby.
What fuel pressure gauge should I get. Not a mechanic, it needs to be simple to install .
This is the first prob I've had with the truck, hope to avoid future probs.

It may or may not help, but my truck acted the same way and a new LP fixed it right up. What lead me to that was an empty fuel filter. If there is fuel in it, drain it and cycle the LP once or twice by bumping the motor. Then check to see if any made it into your filter (drain). If none, probably an LP. Dont run it though if it misses alot. Could harm the VP.
Working better
Replaced the LP tonight and truck is running perfectly. It still idles high though (850-900) which it started doing when it was cutting out. Also the check engine light is still on and I still get the codes 1693 and 0122.
What now?

My truck has always idle'd 850 to 900. From the day I got it. And it was even in for a new lp and vp a couple years ago, and still came back at 850 to 900.
your APPS may be on it's way out. Your check engine light will eventually go out on it's own if there is really no APPS problem. If your APPS is going out, it will let you know sooner or later with the dead pedal or dead spots or odd idling once in a while.

Mine was out in a couple days.
You can always unhook both battery negatives and leave the key on for an hour.
Then turn the key off,
Hook them back up,
Turn the key on,
Push the accellerater pedal all the way in and back out slowly (re-calibrates the APPS), ..this is in the frequently asked questions section, I think.
Now you are ready to go and your lite should be off because your computer should have forgotten all codes.....as well as you having just re-calibrated your apps.
By the way, if your apps is going to hell, the code will be back at some point and you'll see the P0122 again. the 1693 is just telling you that you "do" have a code in your engine computer....which is the apps code (122).
