Tranny Fluid for NV5600
A couple of questions guys, if you dont mind...
Looking at changing transmission fluid in my 6 speed....what are the rest of you guys using? Ive got just over 40k miles - I know that the manual does not specify that its due for a change but Id like to change it anyway. I would like to go with synthetic (Is the factory fluid synthetic??)
I assume you drain it through the PTO port?? Thanks guys.

Yes, it drains thru the lowest bolt in either PTO cover - pull the cover *IF* you want to check gears or magnet - I didn't when I changed mine not too many miles after buying my truck - I tried a popular synthetic - tranny shifted like crap cuz the syncros didn't like the stuff - dumped it and went back to the DC stuff... : :
All is well with the factory (NV) and DC recommended stuff...
More recently, having heard all sorts of good stuff about Redline MTL synthetic, idiot that I am, I bought 4 quarts of that to try next change - probably next spring at about 20,000 miles on the truck - some of us just don't learn... ;D ;D ;D

I have Redline MTL in my truck, and it did make a big difference in the way the truck shifts. The shifter doesn't hang up going into gear, it just slides in. It was worth every penny of the 7 bucks a quart. BTW, my '93 FSM specifies 36k as the interval on the NV4500, but says the Getrag is set for life. Guess they didn't expect it to last long...

I have changed to Redline MTL as well...Have had no problem, and like "wannadiesel" said did work much better. The correct amount to put in is 9.5 pints, however, its very difficult as it starts burping out about at 8 pints through the fill hole. No problem, just fill the balance through the top by removing the top bolt on the PTO cover and pump it in. I put in all 10 pints.

I occasionally read about guys putting in more than 4 quarts - wonder if there are minor variations in castings or something - I could only get in 3 quarts and all but about 1 inch in the bottom of the 4th quart - and THAT was holding my finger over the bottom of the fill plug hole while I got in as much as I could, then QUICKLY screwed in the plug - I just went out and checked, and when I unscrew the fillplug, lube starts really flooding out before I even get the plug completely removed...
NO WAY could I get in more than 4 quarts without Steve's method - and if I did that, I'd be sorta concerned about the lube level being TOO high and creating a potential leak thru the input/output tranny seals...

Re:Tranny Fluid for NV5600
I use Amsoil series 3000 5W-30 engine oil in my NV5600.
I also have FastCoolers on my 6 speed. Mine didn't have any shifting problems before I went to synthetic, and it hasn't had any since making that change.

I assume the filler plug is on the passenger side infront of the reverse switch. Looks like would be hard to fill.

NOPE! Driver's side, close to the PTO cover - takes a special socket for removal - available at Kragen and such if you don't have one...

Strongly echo TomGolden's post.
Works for me.
Amsoil everywhere.
For the last 18+ years in everything I've owned.
Never sold a drop of it for profit, either.
To each, their own.
Lotsa good synthetics out there.
