Problems HELP!
Problems HELP!
i just got a 99 dodge cummins it has about 175,000 miles on it . when i got it i was told that it had some problems but i got it right . so any way here is what i have . it will not charge i have pulled the alt. off and had it test at the local parts store . i have worked on a few of these trucks but mostly the 12 valves . i know on them you had a crank sensor and the pcm to control charging . know as i am typing this i just got to thinking the other problem might be causing the charging problem . this is what i know about the 2nd problem it has a crank shaft sensor code , when you start it misses for awhile then runs fine , the tach jumps all over than quits sets on 0 , thats when it smoths out . i was also told that it eats crank sensors somthing about magnets coming loose on the crank . i would like any feedback on this .
I can only tell you when my Crank Pos Sensor whent out, it did those things you described with the tach. My gauges would move to the right and then to the left as well.
The only other sensor I lost was the Map Sensor. It made the truck stumble hard.
I have had know charging issues so far at 152,000.

What does the camshaft sensor have to do with charging
Does the pcm turn on the regulator when it senses engine revs? The magnet is part of the sensor and may be struck if something is misaligned.

There is a two piece tone wheel screwed onto the crank throw, and yes, they can come loose. Remove the crank sensor and pry on tone wheel through the hole and see if there is any movement (you'll have to use a mirror to observe). Rotate it a few times and check. You'll also want to look for any missing teeth. I had a reman engine come equipped with a missing tooth. That will cause some fits.....and you don't want to know the he77 of having to replace that tone wheel!
Here is some additional info on the CSPS.

Follow the diesel links. Did not see anything about the charging system. It may still be there just did not see it. You may be able to send a e-mail to Fritz with a question.
