Possible to put standard tranny in auto truck?
Possible to put standard tranny in auto truck?
Just curious. I've got a 48RE with no problems but if it goes, I was wondering if it was possible or even worth it to do. Thanks.
Things to think about (in part) might include items such as:
1) New dash (As you wont need the PRND21 on the dash any more)
2) New steering column (As you will no longer need the column mounted gear selector).
3) Clutch pedal assembly and all linkage thereof
4) Possibly different frame mounts to support the standard trans as opposed to the auto trans (Not sure about this one on a Dodge).
5) Is the drive shaft a different length between the two tranny's?
6) You'll have an "O/D" button on your dash that will look a little odd with a stick shift right next to it.
7) Does the Standard trans have a different tansfer case connection? (I dont know).
8) TPS wiring that will no longer go anywhere.
9) Computer for the shift/lockup in the trans may through a code if the auto trans is no longer there.
10) Wiring will need to be installed for the neutral safety switch (no big deal).
This is all I can come up with currently.
May be more, I dont know.

I have done the swap on two older ford diesels. Recently I was going to do the swap in a 94 dodge cummins with the a618 to an NV 4500, however I sold the truck becuase I got a good deal on my 2000 with a 6 speed. any how if any one needs the pedal assembly let me know. I'll let it go for cheap. I know it will work in the 94 through 97 trucks. not sure about 98 to 02. I know the body is the same but the dash looks different. By the way swapping is a lot of work, a typical swap i think will run atleast 3 grand unless you have alot a tools and are a pretty good mechanic. The best way I found to do it is to find a wreck donor truck and strip it. If you go ahead with the swap get a NV5600 tranny, that away you wont be trying to reinstall fifth gear onto the output shaft. However to do that you'll need to find an H.O truck so you get the big flywheel and the 13 inch clutch. Have fun.
