Standard or Auto???
Standard or Auto???
Hello all...
In the spring I will be looking to buy a used 2001 or 2002 Dodge 2500 4x4 quad cab. My question is this...I am also looking to be buying a Travel Trailer that will be about 30' long and will gross out at about 9600 to 10,000 pounds loaded. Most trucks I have seen have a 3.73 axle ratio. Now - should I be looking for a auto or a manual tranny? I am fine driving either or, What my main concern is making sure I do not over load the tranny. I want to be able to run in overdrive on the highways.
Thanks for the replys.

Re:Standard or Auto???
I think you would have a wider range of power with a manual over an auto. I think the auto would work fine, but it just depends on how often you pull. I personally like the manual b/c it has a little less maintenance and I feel it is a little more durable--and I know in the 02, the manual transmission gives a Dana 80 if that makes any difference. If manual, you will need to decide on either the 5 or 6 speed. Others correct me if I am wrong, but the 5 speed is more of an adjusted 4 speed and the 6 speed is a true 6 speed. The gear ration mainly differs in the middle, the high and low being similar. I think it comes down to the amount of pulling. Good Luck
Re:Standard or Auto???
If I can find one, It will be without a doubt a 6speed.
But I have heard issues with the Auto on the Dodge when working. I do not know if that was pre 2001 or not?
Towing would be during the camping season...hopefully every other weekend and one or two long trips each summer.

Re:Standard or Auto???
The auto does have some problems. If you have the money to upgrade or replace the auto with aftermarket you will be fine. The 5 speed have had some problems with the 5th gear nut falling off. I heard that the early 6 speed had problems as well (pre 2001). If it was me i would buy the stick it will most likely do you a better job in the long run. Just my $.02.
Re:Standard or Auto???
I have the auto and have had no problems so far. I do have a shift kit and run synthetic fluid. I pull a 9,000lb 5th wheel and it handles it fine. However, if I had to do it over again, I would probably opt for the standard shift because of durability and the ability to easily add an exhaust brake. But, like I said, I have had good luck with my auto to this point.
Re:Standard or Auto???
From what I've gathered, the auto coupled with a 4.10 axle ratio seems to give it the best longevity. Fuel economy may be sacrificed a bit, though.
I love my 5 speed with the 3.55 axle ratio. Thus far, no problem with the 5th gear nut backing off, but that is a problem. Good Luck!
