mexican diesel

i delivered a 60' yacht to cabo san lucas from san diego a week before christmas 07 and topped off 1/4 the way down in bahia tortuga.we noticed the fuel was yellow(street diesel)as apposed to the red die marine diesel you get in the us and worked out to be $2.40 a gallon.all fuel in mexico is owned by the government(pemex)and they claim all prices are the same for the most part around the country.the fuel is much higher in sulfer therefore prob better for earlier model diesel engines.we did notice both racor water/fuel seperators fill with water much faster than with strait us diesel.both main engines ran fine the rest of the way(2000 john deere 12.5 ltr powertechs).anyone here hop over the border to fill there trucks?i live 30 miles from the border in san diego and have been really tempted to save 30-40 bucks a tank on my 01 2500.

how much is fuel per gallon where you live?

Here in Toronto its $1.06/L or $4.02/gallon Canadian.. which is about the same as US dollars give or take a cent or two..

Currently ranges between about $2.14 - $3.47 here in the Alamo City (San Antonio, TX). Recently I'm able fuel-up for about $3.11 last couple times. Heard on the news there's a huge fuel surplus at this time, and predictions are for cost to drop. Here's a pretty good link for finding cheapest prices; you'll have to find the link to your area (not most user friendly site, but its good info: http://www.sanantoniogasprices.com/index.aspx?fuel=D

I run Mexican diesel all the time. Before I cross the border coming north I fill my tank and 2 15 gal jugs. (Don`t have an aux tank yet) This lasts till I head south again. Haven`t burned US fuel in about 1 1/2 yrs. Last week it was 5.69 pesos/liter. Works out to $2.01 / gal at the current exchange rate.

richf, you`re right, the price is controlled by Pemex. However, there are variations. Diesel fuel purchased at a fuel dock is more expensive. In the frontier zone, near the US border, it is about $.10 US/gal cheaper. It is more expensive if the Pemex station is on a dirt road (?). They are introducing ULSD down there but I can`t find any answers about where or when it is being sold. Guys with the new trucks that require ULSD should stay north of the border till they can get some definitive answers.

I remember going on surfing trips and filling my buddys IH Scout w/ 17 cent/gallon diesel. That thing never missed a beat, I think it was an Isuzu straight 4. Anyway, a little water in the fuel should be easily handeled by the water separator, I wouldn't put it past an entreprenuering businessman to get a little water in his tanks to stretch his profit. No offense meant. The border delay would weigh in on my decision to save a few dollars a week. I'd figure out the $/time thing and then decide. Remember, nobody selling crummy fuel is gonna stay in business very long....anywhere! Kurt

Pemex diesel.

My buddies have run hundreds of gallons of Pemex diesel through their '05 and '07's respectively. The '07's been primarily run on Mex. diesel. No problems thus far,in fact they haven't even opened their filter valve. The horrendous wait coming back is the key. You can time it right at Otay I'm told but after purchasing insurance I don't know if it'd pay. P.S. I forgot to mention that I met the owner of an '03 who just returned from a round trip to Honduras from San Diego. Stock all the way, filters, intake,no Smarty etc. Zero problems. Zero tire problems either. No flats, and tires were deflated to 6psi on one occasion. Toyo MT's 35-12.50-17. This guy should make an ad for Toyo and Dodge.

The ferry is pretty pricey but a lot better than driving all the way to the west coast and down Baja. Try this site. Remember, the prices are in pesos. Devide by 10.7 to get a rough idea of the dollar anount.

Hey, thanks for the info. Yea, definately save about 2-3 days worth of driving/fuel. Which class/categorie do you think they place the dodge 2500 in so I can get a better idea of the cost? thanks again.
