lift pump
hello everybody just joined but have read alot of stuff here and now i need some help. 2001 ram dually diesel leather all power afe cold air kit, guages ,edgemodule 65 hp.
my problem is the fuel pressure when we first hooked it up we only showed 5 to 7 lbs while running and when i stepped on it pressure dissappeared so i got another guage and now no pressure at all. truck has no problems though plenty of power starts easily and doesnt smoke fuel economy is not too bad either. there was a recall on the pump dealer says it was replaced. can anyone tell me if there is a performance pump ?
or someone here in NC raliegh area can check this for me?
thanks guys

Floorman,
If you are showing no pressure on 2 different pressure guages, you NEED to replace your lift pump ASAP...if you cant do it yourself, have the truck towed to a shop that can...if you continue to drive the truck you will be replacing your injector pump and the bill will be well over $2k...good luck with it...

The dealer will not be the one broke down on the side of the road on a rainy or snowy night. I just went through this with the dealer, they won’t fail the pump, but the pump is just barely hanging in there. I had 8psi @ idle, 5psi @ cruse and 0@ wot. The vp-44 gets its lube and cooling from the fuel oil going through it so I installed high flow banjo bolts and a new lift pump. Now I have 15 1/2psi @idle, 11psi @ 70mph and 8psi @ wot. I have also noticed the line going from the bottom of the filter to the vp-44 is very small. I am looking at changing that to a larger line also. If I were you I would replace the pump. I think it cost about $147.00 at Cummins and $224.00 at Dodge, and don’t forget to get new rubberized washers.
Good Luck.

Billg,
Call Rod at wildcatdiesel and get him to send you a couple of his Hi-Flow banjo fittings(not the banjo bolts, which you already have) & and a piece of 1/2" diameter hose. this will replace the stock iddy-biddy fuel line you are talking about. A friend of mine gave me this setup that he got from Rod. I havent put it on yet, but will this weekend.
Those banjo fittings from Rod are HUGE! compared to stock. I cant wait to get mine on!

I would be sure and take it to the nearest dealer or shop....I wouldnt drive it very far - if your VP44 injector pump isnt getting sufficient fuel, it will be overheated and may pack it in....good luck.

As long as your lift pump hasn't failed in a way that's blocking fuel flow from the tank, you can still drive the truck using light throttle, keeping the engine speed below 2000 rpm or so. It isn't until rpm and fuel demand gets high that the positive pressure on the VP44 is really necessary. I wouldn't do this for long, but you don't have to have it towed. Plenty of VP44s have gone lots of miles with dead lift pumps.
And make sure you have high confidence in your fuel pressure readings. If you're reading off one of the schrader fittings, sometimes the guage connector wont depress the valve enough to open it.
