High EGTs on purpose??

I have heard that occasionally its good to run the EGTs hot so as to burn out carbon build-up, is this true?

I'd say no.

Diesels already run hot enough to prevent carbon buildup.

some of the new engines are deliberatelly spiking the egt's to burn out the particulate traps.

Yeah, the 2007's with the 6.7 do that intentionally to clean out the particle filter.

With the temperature and velocity of the exhaust gases, (especially through the turbo) there is very little carbon buildup.
