GM rear brake cylinder mod

I am planning on swithing my rear wheel cylinders on Sunday and I went under the truck today to spray some penatrating oil on the bolts and line,I noticed that the brake fluid feed lines are on a angle going into the backing plate. The GM cylinders I bought have a straight on inlet into the cylinder,I dont have it apart yet so I cant see the inner part of the backing plate,Just wondering do you have to modify the backing plate to use the GM cylinders.I got the Napa part# from a post in the search archives. Thanks and Happy New Year Everybody

Dave, they are a direct bolt in. I did it to mine and there is no comparison to what the brakes were stock.

GM Rear Cylinders

Tom,I was just wandering, the original cyl.hes the brake fluid line coming in from a angle and the GM cylinders have a straight in where the line would come in,I guess it would be no big deal to drill out the backing plate.

I did the swap also and on my 98 and the lines are straight in, the same as the Nappa cyls so sometime between 98 and 2000 they changed I guess? On mine the wheel cyl boss actually fits through the backing plate and the bleeder screw is on a angle. So your line shouldnt go thru the backing plate?

I did mine a few months ago and don't remember a big difference. Mine bolted up real quick and easy. If you want I can go crawl under and take a look and see if they are straight or angled.

I did mine and had to loosen the line bracket on the rear end housing to "adjust" the lines. other than that, a direct bolt in. The backing plate doesn't need to be modified. My truck being a 2001, is prolly the last run of rear drums, and I had no probs.

Make sure you hang onto your coffee when you first try the brakes!

Bleed them well.

They will be alittle touchy for about 500 miles or so. They will need time to seat in from the extra use. You might even feel a "shimmy" during hard braking. Mine still does it so I call it normal for my truck.
