Running The Overhead

I just bought a 2001 Ram 24 valve and someone told me that after 100k miles to get the overhead ran. So, I took it to a diesel shop and got it done for $100.00. It doesn't seem to rattle as much but at the same time doesn't idle as well as it used to. Then about a week later I was reading in my Haynes manual that my particular truck adjusts itself and the overhead never needs to be ran. Whats everyones thoughts on this? Also, I watched the guy do it and to determine TDC he just turned the engine until the correct valve was up to its top point and not by pulling the timing cover as listed in my manual. I need some good direction.
