Crazy wheel hop
Crazy wheel hop
Hey guys.. somethings bothering me.. It snowed like a bastard here last night in Canada like 12-15 inches. and I had to take the ol lady to work in my 01 3/4 ton 6 speed and I know when I turn the truck will hop from binding parts but why would it do that when ever i was in 2-hi and going straight but jus tthe tires were spinning in the snow. it would hop just liek it would when turning sharp in 4hi I thought it was a blown motor mount but I held the brake in while letting off the clutch slowly and the motor never lifted unnormally alot... please help guys this snows here for liek anohter 3-4 months...and I don't want to wreck my rig
thanks alot
thanks alot
What about a u-joint binding because it is busted? Possibly a lack of lubrication (not your fault as they are designed to not need lubrication
)
Can you jack it up and spin the wheels to see if any of the joints are binding?

Im guessing its just spinning, and then finding traction, and spinning, and finding traction. You are more than likely just not getting good enough traction to keep it from spinning which is making it hop. If you can find a dry place see if it does the same or stops.

Like the others say, it's probably just axle hop, from spinning the tires. As the power turns the drive wheels one direction, the axle housing tries to rotate the other direction, but is limited by the leaf springs, so it winds up, and the suspension forces it back down. This oscillation continues, and is amplified by the lift blocks our 4wd trucks have, because they provide leverage.
This is what I think you are feeling, and is normal, but check it out, to be on the safe side.

Hey Gieco, how much dog food do you have to give your dog to let you take his truck out for a spin??? LOL
Here is something to chew on. I have a 2WD 3500 dualie in snow no less. I was half stuck in fresh 6 inch snow and couldn't go forward. I put it in reverse and "hopped" my way to unstuck. Since I had more time on my hands than $$$ I tried again going the other way on the road. Same thing....it don't go forward but goes in reverse by "hopping". I backed up and down the street a couple times but be darned if I could go forward. even slightly up hill it worked. My truck hopps when wet all the time from a stop. The Michlelins are NFG when wet. Maybe this spring I'll get around to making a set of traction bars.
I also found that Granny 1st is the way to start with the the 5sp in snow. Just ease out the clutch and she goes if it is going to go at all. 2nd will just spin untill you get up to idle speed.
I also passed a lot of 4WD in the median in the big mess last week in ILL, Ky and TN. I skated around a bit but it was under control like a dirt racer.
