Question Auto Tranny Sensor problems??

I am looking at buying a 99 4x4 47re auto cummins, truck for my son and have a question...

I owned a 99 with auto and the Cumming before this truck and had bad luck with sensors in the tranny going out, Is this a known problem with the 47re?

Or should I avoid it and go manual?

I've heard about some problems with the govenor pressure switch. Doesn't seem like a wide spread problem, like say the lift pumps. I think replacement parts are $150.

Is he going to tow or hodrod?

He's 17 What do ya think.....

Hot Rod of course.....

I know that would normally mean an auto with upgraded VB and TC, however I was thinking a 5 or 6 spd would be ok with a short shifter and clutch installed.

There is a white dually in a video I have seen online, that is running low 10's on a 6 spd.

What is bad on the 00 and 01 models? I know of the engine block issue (cant remember the # ), and the injector pump on the 01's

Thanks for any help

I would check for the 53 block. Take the VIN number to a Dodge dealer to see what has been repaired under warranty. I would also bring a fuel pressure guage to check the lift pump. Also, check the condition of the front brakes, rotors. Could be a bargining chip with regards to price.

You also might want to see if the pump wire has ever been tapped. If you have a scan tool, you could also try to pull codes.

You can also take it to a Cummins shop and they will look the engine over for you.

Hope this gives you some good ideas.

Some of the 53 blocks were ok...... right???

If so, how could I tell?

I think I will do the test on the lift pump.

BTW, we decided on an 01 truck with a 6 speed, we are going to look at it saturday, I will check the lift pump and the block.

Also, isnt the FASS fuel system supposed to fix the injector pump issue?

Thanks for your help Mike

You got me on the 53 block issue, I would steer clear of any 53 block. FASS is a good pump from what I hear, but wouldn't call it a cure. Some injector pumps have electronic issue which kill the pump.

Post a pic of the truck if you get it.

Good luck.

If it is a 53 block then it could cause you problems, a 53 block is a 53 block.
To find out if it is a 53 block look on the drivers side below the injection pump by the oil pan. There should be stamped in big numbers 53, if it has a bunch of small numbers it's not a 53.

It does not matter what lift pump or aftermarket lift pump you put on the injection pump is susceptible to failure, like any wear item it will eventually fail. There is no cure only good fuel supply will help it live, for how long no one can give a definate answer. Stock lift pumps have made injection pumps live for over 300,000 miles and some injection pumps die at less then 50,000, just the nature of the beast.

For a teenager the best transmission is a manual, harder to destroy then an automatic, beleive me I was young once and no auto would stand up to my hell raising but I never had to replace a clutch or gears in any of the manuals I owned. Replaced too many autos to even want to think about. Even old age doesn't make me any smarter, see signature.

Agreed on the auto vs. stick thing. My auto hates life. I wish I had gotten a manual. I would have had a new clutch by now and a lot more toys. But no, I'm stuck with this blasted slipping automatic and I need at least $4500 to build it the way I want it. Hmm, $1000 for a new clutch or $4500 for a new, well built automatic? Which one would you rather have?

Found the truck!

It has a FASS already installed, no 53 block, custom bumpers front and back, new clutch and other related items, fully loaded (except cloth seats), 102 gallon fuel capacity, tool box, spray in liner, and may other add ons....

However it seems as though the rear ABS sensor has gone out, he says that the speedo and cruise work fine, but that the ABS light is on.... Thoughts???

All in all a very impressive truck!
