Tranny Problems!!!! Hopefuly some kind of sensor!?!?!

Okay, So I'm newer to diesels, well not that new, have been watching my dad work on this truck since 1992. I just bought it off him 2 months ago The truck is a Ram 250 Everything stock, 134k miles. total N/A truck, Except i turned the star wheel 90 degrees, and the fuel pump screw one and a half times. So the problem i am having is new though. the tranny will shift fine manually in first and second gear. but when i go into drive it slips, or if i take off in drive it slips through 1st and second., THIS IS AN AUTO TRANNY, but if it trys to shift automatically it just revs really high and stuff, is it the Torque converter? Or just some sort of a sensor i hope!!! I'M broke right now

When you manually shift, you eliminate the band I think??? Thats why it won't slip manually, but it sounds like you have bigger problems with the slipping in drive. I've had a few trannies apart, but not nearly an expert. Sure sounds internal though.

First get rid of the check valve in the cooler line, and second, replace the cooler! Been there and done that!

Hey dude! Where is the check valve of-eth you speak? And do you mean the water cooled cylinder on the passenger side, or the one up front? Thanks!!

The valve is in the cooler line. Some people call it an anti-drainback valve. I would replace both coolers too. The passages in them are tiny and they are likely to get clogged , especially after a tranny grenades! They aren't cheap, but it could be most of your tranny woes!

Sounds like you should find a different tranny shop .
If you guys have been installing those trans your selfs , did you flush the other components ? - Lines , coolers , heat exchangers ?

Flushing just gets the loose stuff out. I have seen the coolers plugged tight! Don't waste your time or money on the flush. Even Jasper transmissions reccomend having the coolers replaced.

I do not remember for sure , maybe the rear is the return , you want to drain from the return end , so disconnect the return , connect a hose to a 5 gal bucket , tie the hose into the bucket so it does not go flying .
You may want to use a flush chem. [ check with a local trans shop ] -follow instructions on can , have about 16 qts or more of trany fluid ready with the caps off , you want to replace fluid as fast as it comes out [ eng. running ] , should have a 2nd person so that the trans does not run dry , and so that you can look at fluid coming out to see if its new looking , then you shut eng off and put back together , and check fluid level before hitting the road .

i did as you said to and the tranny is acting liek brand new, the shop that rebuilt my tranny before must have never flushed it, the tranny cooler was clogged, i took 150psi of air to blow it out, and its fine now. thank you so much

Hope it works for ya! IMHO I would replace it though. If you could see a cross section of one, you will see how small the passages are and how they can get clogged. You may have freed up some of it, but I would bet it isn't working efficiently. Do you have a tranny temp guage? Just my $.02
