5 power steering pumps in a year?
Hey yall. A buddy of mine is having a problem with his power steering pumps. He has a 99 CTD quad cab long bed with 127k on the clock. He's got a 4.5" skyjacker lift with 2" spacers on the front and a 3" added block in the rear. He's running 37" swampers. He's gone through 5 power steering pumps in the past year or so. He said they are lasting him about 2 or 3 months and then suddenly he can't turn and there is fluid everywhere. He's got the DT Track bar waiting to be installed along with a crossover steering setup and a long arm system. Do yall have any idea why he keeps blowing these things? Thanks for the help yall.
Hmm...sounds like he is breaking the pressure relief valve spring.....that is a sign that the pump is running at or past it's pressure limit too frequently - it is being overworked.....just a guess. 67's advice to look at the box is a good one.....stepping up to an aftermarket heavy duty box with a more appropraite variable ratio could take the strain off the pump. The ultimate solution would be an AGR Rock Ram complete system or a complete system from Howe.....these systems will be the end of smoked boxes and pumps and offer unreal power assist.......
does he turn his tires frequently without moving? such as when leaving a parking spot and turning the wheel before you begin backing up? does he offroad and force the steering wheel a lot when negotiating terrain?
just brainstorming.
