I've swapped out a couple - the last one was Saturday night - but it was a Chevy AWD Astro. Dunno about the Dodge, its not real brain buster, but depending on how its mounted (brackets, AC compressors, idler arms, radiator in the way), it can be a wrestling match.

Disconnect the hoses and have something to catch the fluid; else it'll find its way on the floor and you when you lift it out.

Nothing to it, take the lines off, remove the mounting bolts and its off! But here's an excerpt from the service manual anyhow! LOL

REMOVAL - DIESEL ENGINE
Remove and cap steering pump hoses and vacuum pump vacuum line.
Remove the sender unit from engine block and plug hole in block (Oil Pressure Sending Unit).
Remove the serpentine belt, (Refer to 7 - COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/DRIVE BELTS - REMOVAL).
Remove and cap the oil feed line from the bottom of the vacuum pump (Oil).
Remove the lower bolt that attaches the vacuum/steering pump assembly to the engine block. Remove the nut from the steering pump attaching bracket (Oil).
Remove upper bolt from the pump assembly (Pump Assembly Upper Bolt) and remove the assembly.
Remove the mounting gasket.
Remove the steering pump to vacuum pump bracket attaching nuts (Bracket Mounting Nuts).
Slide the steering pump from the bracket. Use care not to damage the internal oil seal in the vacuum pump (Steering Pump & Vacuum Pump).
Remove the two pump body spacers.

I will say, it CAN be done without taking the vacuum pump off!

I agree witrh vzdude, you can remove the PS pump without pulling the vacuum pump, if you want. I pulled my vacuum pump without pulling the PS pump last month. The hardest part is the bracket from the PS pump to the block. It's a pain to get to. Of course, I pulled no PS lines so I don't know how much of a bear those will be. Since it is a 2001 there should be no oil sending unit right behing the PS pump, in th eblock, but make sure there's nothing there to break off as you wrestle the pump out. I broke the plug on my sending unit because I forgot it was right behind the PS pump when I pulled mine. Fortunately Napa had a factory replacement.

Last month I removed both my Vacuum pump and the Power Steering pump, and I would recomend taking them both out and rebuilding both. Personally I found it easier to remove both. Additionally, I disconnected the feel line hose at the brake booster and left it attached to the power steering pump and this left a bit of a handle to help get it out - and then back in again.

Bear in mind, this was on a '97... I dunno about '01s.

Sean.

I second Stamey statement: Don't forget to remove the electrical connector that is on your oil pressure sensor directly behind the pump. (This oil pressure sensor is threaded into the block). If you don't remove this first, you WILL break the plastic housing on the sensor or wiring harness.

Cheers,
Sean.

Ya definitely do the vacuum pump seal while you are in there.

It is easier to R & R the assy if you pull the intake tube off. There is no need to remove the serp belt. I echo the recommendation to replace the vac pump seal while you are in there. Less than $10 from Cummins. PN 4089742 comes with instructions and the big gasket to the gear case. Remember to look at which way the seal faces before the removal, the pic for reinstallation isn't too good.

Thanks for the advise, I rebuilt his pump on tuesday, it was a learning expirience. But I was sucessful no more leaks. the guy that rebuilt it the last time mist have used a rock and a hammer cause that thing had a buch of gouge marks on the inside by the seals. a little bit of 220grit sand paper took care of that though.
