I would fix all leaks, new fluids, and tires. I may make great money now, but I've been at the very bottom before and had to make every dollar stretch. I've bought "used" tires from some shops, and some shops even gave me the tires, just charged me to install them. I'm talking about 4 matching tires with a few thousand miles on them that someone took off because they bought some nice big mud tires. Never spent more than $120 on 4 mounted and ballanced, and I swear they were almost new!
That should cover most of your $500 budget, but you'll be rolling with confidence for awhile that you shouldnt have any breakdowns and the money you save from keeping the truck in top mechanical shape you can put into making it look as good as it runs.
Next "Performance" mod I'd sugest is an IC though. Get the EGT's down and make more of the power you have useable.

I'm with the others that have posted BUT......
If the moneys burning a hole in your pocket I have 2 words for you-Borgeson Shaft.
It won't eat up the whole $500 so you could buy beer to drink while doing the install.
Best money I think I've spent on any of my 1st Gen's.

A Borgensen shaft is only going to solve problems related to bad u-joint or bad rag joint of the old shaft. It will do nothing to help bad or loose steering boxes, bad tie rod ends, links, wheel bearings, etc. etc..There are no magic bullets. Have you considered savng the 500 dollars? Mark

Helicoil them because you keep the same bolt sizes for all. Otherwise you'll be using two different sizes sockets....
BTW,
If I had $500 coming to me, I'd do one of several things
1. Save it for bigger and better fixes
2. fix a bunch of smaller things
3. Pay off some debt.
or if I knew I was going to leave this earth relatively soon ....
Hire two hookers, buy a bottle of green label Jack and have some real fun for a few hours.
But that's just me...
