I love my 12 valve and from what I see I can build it up quickly to put more HP on the ground than I need!.
But then again Need is a relative term ;D
I can easily afford a brand new truck, but I keep asking myself "what will I gain?". I love this truck, I had it built for me, it has everything I want except a bulletproof auto tranny. And they still don't have that yet!. Close maybe but not yet, Unless you go after market.
I think the 24v is a great motor, but for me I don't see the need to change. IMHO
*leads the mob* "12 VALVE! 12 VALVE! 12 VALVE!"

Nothing sweeter than a mechanically fuel injected in-line six turbo diesel. *all the ladies faint*

12 valve for me. Its a personal thing concerning automotive electronics. I hate lifting a hood and seeing almost nothing but wires, relays, brain boxes and associated items. I guess I'm trying to hold on to the simpler things.

Jerry

Re:are you happy with the 12v or would you rather have a 24v

I've got both in the family. ;D my son worked all summer to earn enough to buy his own CTD, a 12 valve '94. I love it as much as he does, the 12's are sweet lil thangs....
The 24's are easier to hotrod for a novice or anyone with few mechanical skills...just a few simple electrical connections, 60-130 HP, adjustable in-cab!
The 12's are for taking to EXTREMES, or simply fiddling with if you are mechanically inclined.
Scared of electronics? No need to be. It's all replaceable components. The hassle is in finding which one of the little critters is acting up. ;D
You didn't give us enough information... will the truck be a daily driver? Planning to put a lot of miles on it? Planning to leave it stock, or bump the power up a little? A lot? How are you when it comes to mechanical skills? Semi-skilled do-it-yourselfer and up, I'd get a 12. Otherwise, go with a 24, the electronic components, even the injection pump, are easily replaced by most service shops. Major pump service or hotrodding on the 12 valve P pump requires finding a decent "pump shop" like Piers Diesel Research or Scheid Diesel.
Lots of miles coming up, I'd get the newest truck, lowest miles that I could afford, which would mean a 24 valve.

Lot of good advise from BriarHopper. I bought mine new in 94 and for me its the perfect truck. I am one of those that love to tinker and do all my own work if possible so it is the 12 valve for me. Nothing against the 24, its just the 12 fits my personality a lot better.
Michael

Re:are you happy with the 12v or would you rather have a 24v

I REALY liked my 12v...but lost it in a recent divorce settlement :'(

I'll be buying a new '03 CTD because the new trucks have so many goodies....had I not lost my truck - I wouldn't be upgrading it. I'm sure you'll be happy with either motor you choose.

Lastly, you need to take all the advice given in this thread with a grain of salt...notice all the folks replying to the thread are 12 valve owners....this is the 12 valve forum. Go to the 24 valve forum (if you haven't allready) and ask the same question, I'm sure everyone will yell 24 valve.

MisterKTM; I'm not a 12 valve owner.... I own a 2001 dually , the 12 belongs entirely to my son, who worked hard to get it.
My views are pretty objective, I think.... both 12's and 24's have their good and bad points. It's simple: What are the intended uses of the truck? Get that question answered, it'll be simple to chose one or the other.
One thing , though. A Cummins is a Cummins. They're all good ! ;D
