Turbo housing install

Considering many upgrades to do. Still planning out game plan. One of them being the turbine housing. Really don't know what I have now, stock, but I've poked around some and hearing that 16 cm housing is the way to go. Truck is all stock for now. Truck is used for working(dump truck and had a plow)

thanks

turbo exhaust housing II

Forgot to ask my question.

Which size is the best all around use and are there different names to consider?

Difficulty level to install?

Thanks

Ok your showing an 89 model with an auto in your sig. That means a 727 and a set of 3:08 gears. It should have a 18.5cm housing on it all ready. Stepping to a 16cm will only give you around 2 PSI more boost than your already making. It will raise EGt's a little over what your seeing right now. At WOT I had a 50 degree increase on EGT's at WOT when going from a 18cm to a 16cm. Spoolup time most likely you will not see any difference. I didn't.

Going from a 18cm to a 16cm isn't worth the cost of the housing. With your truck being an auto with the high gears in it. I wouldn't go any smaller than a 16cm if you do swap it out.

Yes, this is for my 89. Hmm, doesn't sound so appealing. Even with the addition of a GSK, and a fuel pin grind? With these, will I get a more noticeable, usable power?

Housing install? difficulty?

thanks

I can't really help on housing selection, but can offer advice for swapping it.

You have to take the turbo off, so get a new turbo to manifold gasket and oil drain tube gasket. You can get both at Case for under 5$.

The ex housing can be a bear to get off. It has metric bolts. You can only get 2 of them screwed all the way out with the housing still on. The other two will hit on the center peice before they come all of the way out. They will NOT push the housing off, they will get bent and or stripped if you try. Trust me. Once the housing pulls off like a 1/4" they will come out. Mark the position of the ex housing to the center, in a place you can line up on the new housing too. It will rotate 360* but is a pain when its bolted back on. I would pull it off and soak it with good penetrating oil overnight. Then you have to beat on the ex housing untill it falls off. It will require some pretty good effort. I had to stop a couple of times and reassure myself it was ok to beat it like that. Just keep "tapping" around it, make sure the shaft will still turn. When it binds up, tap the other side. Clean all the rust and crap from the housing(if used) and center section. That way it pulls together nicely. If you wrench just one side down it will bind on the turbine. So tighten the bolts in a criss-cross patten to pull it together evenly, turning the shaft ocassionally to check for binding..

I'd stick with the housing you have.

I love my "new" 18cm housing!! Mine originally had the 21cm "lagmaster" and there was a significant difference in the time it takes to spool. I gained about 2-3 psi and I also turned the fuel screw back in a little and now I'm hitting 21psi fairly easily. Oh yeah, I can really hear the turbo sing through the exhaust now at part throttle!
Tell ya what, I'll send you my old 21cm, you run that for a week and you won't be able to put that 18 back on fast enough!

Even with a fuel pin and GSK it isn't worth the effort to swap housings. The only way I would recommend a 16cm housing for your truck is if it has a HX40 attached to it. Then throw a 4" exhaust and don't worry about upgrading turbo's and exhaust for a while.
