Best place to get a 16cm housing or 12cm wg housing

Hi all,

I currently have what I believe to be a 21 cm housing my 91 IC with a 5 speed (tough to say with all the rust, but it doesn't spool until I am about to shift) and want to upgrade.

This is a DD/Towrig for up to a fullsize rigs running big meats (probably 8-10K with some relatively steep grades through the mountains going to Tellico from the east).

Based on my searches it seems that one of these two will be the best choice. Just did the 3200 spring and gauges are on the way.

Are all of the 16cm housings the same? Are some ported etc? Any recommendations on places for good prices etc. The one on HTT for 155.00 doesn't seem too bad.

Are takeoff 12cm housings the only source for wategated housings? I don't see any listed new other than non-wg. I am fine with used as I am cheap, but don't really know where to start looking.

The 16cm seems attractive since I would not have to mess with the downpipe.

Any recommendations on where to look are appreciated.

thanks,

adam

Used WG 12cm housings can be had pretty cheap. I have one on my truck right now, and it was a huge step up from the 18cm it came with stock. With stock injectors I think it's hard to beat the 12cm housing.

I wouldn't worry about having to move the down pipe/exhaust. A couple minutes under the truck loosening and tightening some hangers with a buddy to help push stuff around, you will not have any problems.

If you are pretty sure you will stick with the stock injectors, try to find a 12 cm wg unit. The extra fast spoolup makes driving with the 5 speed a lot more fun.

so then if 16cm w/190's then non/ic trucks with stock injectors use 16cm housing as well instead of 12wg?

If he wasn't doing heavy towing up mountains I'd still recommend the 12 cm with the 190's. He needs low backpressure at high RPM. Turbine housing selection depends a lot on the intended use, not just on the fuel available.

not trying to hijack, but what about work truck/truck pulls? also looking ahead to possible twins, should i just bite the bullet and go after a 14wg?

Nah, a 12 cm wg works fine on a top turbo. 14 cm wg housings are a waste of money - and I have one so I should know.

With an HX-35 my favorite was always the NON- gated 14cm. You don't need a wastegate until about 35 psi. If I tried to wastegate it sooner the egt's would soar.
